Getting close to the finish line on my 65 restoration:
Before I button up the trunk I was wondering if anyone can identify the purpose for these holes in the cross wall and trunk area:
I think these have something to do with the trunk liner? they are opposite eachother in the trunk
Not sure about these two:

Not sure about the center one in the second pic, but all the other holes you circled are for the wiring harness (lights, horn, brake light switches etc)
Nice looking car! |

yeah I am getting ready to place an order for rubber grommets and not sure if I need them for these holes. The two opposite eachother in the top photo look like there is some sort of support beam that rests in the indentations where the holes are?
Pretty sure the small one to the right is for wiring but big center one is a mystery. _________________ I love this analog addition to my over digitzed life.

Yes you will, or they come with wiring harness kits (at least the one I got from WW did)
There are rubber tubes that run from those outer holes to the back of the headlight, not sure what beams might be there . . .

I got the full wiring harness from WWW not sure if there were any grommets in the kit. OK I did get 6 grommets and have installed all of them so the ones in the pictures are not included in my kit. _________________ I love this analog addition to my over digitzed life. |

Still curious what the large one in the center of the cross wall is. No refrerence in the Great Blue VW manual. _________________ I love this analog addition to my over digitzed life. |

The center hole is for the reserve tap for the gas tank. They came on US models thru '61. Some Euro models may have had them longer. Since you have a gas gauge, the reserve is redundant. _________________ Kenneth

The reason you have that top hole in a 65 is because 65 is the last year for the 36hp engine with a manual choke and no gas gauge/ reserve tap in the "A" Sedan and also the European 1200 Custom, both 111 models. Also the 112, 115, 116 models are like that too.
In the second picture, next to the tube for the hood cable release the hole is for the plastic fuel hose holder that holds the overflow vent hose in a loop before it goes out the left wheel house. |

I'm not sure what that hole is for, but it is NOT for the Fuel Reserve Tap/Lever. The hole for the lever is down closer to the tunnel. Here's a pic of the hole from a reproduction firewall. On my '61, it is in the same location.

I can only find that top center hole on aftermarket sheet metal replacement panels, originals don't seem to have it. The only thing that makes sense to me would be possibly a drain hose location for air conditioning, but on the few pics I can find where you can see the condensate drain it's located lower than the top of the firewall. What I can say for certain is the hole is not for the fuel tap, nor is it the correct location for the manual choke cable. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Nice work on your '65! I have a related question for the experts. The hole on the right in this pic (next to steering shaft) -- that's for both the horn wire to steering shaft as well as to brake light switch right?
How are these 2 wires routed from behind the dash to this hole? On my 65 there are 2 holes on the centerline of the trunk (the locations of which are blocked by the wiring in the above pic). Do the wires go from behind the dash into the passenger compartment and then come out again near the steering shaft?
Thanks!
