When i come out of throttle I hear a bit of a whine as the car unwinds that goes away as it comes under 2500ish or when i get back in throttle. The fan feels clear and when you spin the fan generator by hand it feels file.

I havent done the rear wheel bearings yet and have the parts on order and at the same time I could pull the generator and put new bearings in it (looks like if i pull the generator stand it should slide right out. Anything else I should check?

Not quite as easy as that; I'd recommend to pull the engine to remove the generator. On the other hand, being experienced - I have removed the fan shrouds/generators on both my 1970 and 1971 without dropping the engine (one must remove the engine lid, mark its position first).

And I have replaced generator bearings, but over 35 years ago.

Will it make the noise sitting in the garage. If so, take the belt off of it and rev it up to 3000 grand, let the throttle go and listen. You only have a minute or so to run it like that, but if the noise goes away, it is either the generator bearings or a broken fan hub. If the noise is still there, get the belt back on and then drain the tranny. See what color the oil is and what is in it (fine metal particulate)?

I have never heard it make it in the garage but never really listened for it either. I will give it a shot, when I drained the transmission fluid last year it was fairly clean but something could of gone wrong before then.

It also could just be this is the way these cars sound, its not really that high pitch of a whine but this is the first air cooled car ive driven and all of my other junk is V8's or inline 6's so maybe its normal Very Happy

So I had a bunch of freeplay in the clutch that I kept forgetting to adjust. Last night i finally remembered to adjust it and this morning it seems like the whine went away.

Have you ever put a little bit of Bosch distributor grease at the points rubbing block inside the distributor cap?
