don't know about San Jose, but I DO know one in FRESNO that you want to avoid if you broke down in their front yard, was on fire, and your ex mother in law offered to pay the bill.

Speed Unlimited in Fresno. Pure incompetent assholes!

Have you posted on www.craigslist.org asking for a south bay recommendation?

i understand Freds Garage in Redwood City has a good reputation for Vanagons, so you might check them out. They are VW only, and have lots of Vanagons in there lot.

Other than the regular rust, and accident inspections you will want a compression test, and a smog test. If water cooled it is very important that the coolant was maintained, leaks of antifreeze at the heads mean getting a rebuild real soon, and that can be pricey.

Go westy might also be able to give advice, they know Vanagons, but are a bit further away.

good luck, check it carefully.

I think I would send a PM to Karl (do a search for his PM address) and ask him for a reccomendation. I think Karl is in Fresno and is over in the Baywindow Furm sometimes, but I would take his advice to the bank.
