I was driving in 4th gear and went to downshift into 3rd and the shift level stuck. It will not unstick now.
We know the clutch works, as while the tranny is stuck in gear we can run the engine with the clutch depressed. Shift linkage seems fine. No obstructions in the front. When I pull the linkage from the shaft on the tranny I still cannot move the shaft with pliers.
Could this be the notorious disintegrating 4th gear synchro issue? Seems like the research would support this

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. Sounds like the jury is in agreement. It's been towed to my trusted VW shop for further inspection. Will update if it's some kind of curveball.

Before you drop the transmission, take the linkage off first, I have seen them bind and stick giving the feeling of being stuck in gear.
With the linkage off, can you move through the gears, on the linkage on the side of the transmission, if no, now you need to drop the transmission.
