The Air-Schooled Games - 2
Greetings, everyone! Recently, I’ve seen a few new members digging in and participating in the diagnosing of various bus issues around here. Kudos to you folks, keep it up!
To keep the spirit of learning alive, I’d like to propose a game. Every week, I will post a thread as a new VW owner who is having a problem with their bus, (occasionally using confusing words and “great advice I get from Facebook.”) To those of you who read threads and do not participate much because you fear being wrong or giving bad advice, this thread is for you!! To those of you who can diagnose from a thousand miles away, please watch from a distance. I don’t want any regulars chiming in instantly and ruining the fun!
Rules:
1) Ask questions, make suggestions, and learn! Don’t be afraid!
2) Every thread scenario has actually happened.
3) Newbies only. You know who you are.
4) No prizes… Yet!!!!
See you on the “road.” Game 2 is in the next post!

Subject: bus starts slowly
Hello, I just finished reinstalling my engine for the first time. Woohoo! But every time I go to start the car, it starts really slowly. I already had the battery checked at AutoZone, and they said it was good. They charged it anyway, but it still starts really slow. Any ideas? _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. Sooo, what type of engine, induction, and weather are we talking about? You should put your location and bus specifics in your tag line _________________ Keep on Busin'

Not to mention the bus' NAME, Dammit. If I had a VW Bus that would BE its name... usually preceded by GAWD. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

What are the specs of your bus?
When you say it, "starts slowly", what exactly do you mean? It turns over slowly? Does it eventually start? Have you checked all your electrical connections, battery cables, ground straps, battery to starter? Did autozone also check your a alternator? _________________ 77 westy 2.0 FI

When starting the Bus, and attempting to crank the engine a while to get it to start, does the ignition switch feel hot? Are there any other electrical system effects noticed?
Have the wires between the battery, starter, ignition switch, and coil all been inspected for correct gauge, and terminals cleaned for good conductivity? _________________ Few will understand the passion and majesty, among the nuts and grease.

I've had a similar problem with my '76 that was solved by installing a "Hot Start Relay" that basically allows full 12V coming from the Battery to go to the Starter instead of traveling all the way up to the front of the bus to the ignition and then all the way back to the starter. I'm currently attempting to find a wiring diagram for this but if anybody else has it go ahead and post it
:EDIT: Found it http://type2.com/bartnik/images/relay.gif _________________ 1976 Type II Westy P22

Doesn't sound like a hot start issue to me.
Do easy first.
Since you just installed the engine - did you check all the grounds?
Check the ground strap on the transmission and report back please.
FYI - I've heard using the wrong grease when you recondition your starter may make it harder to crank over - to the point of needing to whack it with a wrench every so often. But - I wouldn't bother with this as the culprit - unless you've had some deranged mechanic hanging around recently. _________________ '75 Riviera - 'BIG EMMA' (Pan American highway trip paused for a make over)

True, i've had that issue as well (turned out the Solenoid on the starter was going bad) _________________ 1976 Type II Westy P22

Why was the engine out? Did you mess with the distributor? _________________ Tom

They are attracted to that black stuff one gets all over the hands, body and clothes when servicing CV joints. The smell attracts them. What I want to know is how do you keep that stuff off you? Even my pillow smells like it the next morning. I go to drink coffee and there is a sheen on it. Why does this happen? PLEASE help me.
Lost in a cloud of smoke in Norcal. I think I am driving in circles because the right rear side of the bus keeps clicking. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |
