Does anyone make a splined sleeve that will fit this coupler? My buggy has a steering shaft that's 7/8OD and the way they have it is the shaft just slipping over the splined male shaft with a clamp around it. I'd like to find a splined coupler that will slip over the splines that I can machine and weld to my steering shaft.

That's how VW did it. The stock shaft is about 7/8" OD and has a slot for the tube to be clamped onto the very fine splines of the coupler. Then there's a notch in the tube for the pinch bolt in the clamp. _________________ Richard

Yup, I did what VW did, just slit the shaft and put a pinch clamp on it.
I will take a pic tonight.
Fun fact, I don’t believe the stock sheeting shafts were splined to match the coupler. The marks left on the inside of the shaft appear to just be witness marks from pinching on the splines coupler. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

This is just the generic aftermarket 7/8” steering shaft. I slit the last couple inches of the tube lengthwise and drilled a hole where the slit ended. Then I just used a worm tail file perpendicular to the slot to make clearance for the 8mm pinch bolt. The pinch clamp is a stock VW part. You could substitute a two piece shaft clamp to accomplish the same thing as the stock pinch clamp...I wouldn’t use a single piece shaft clamp as this does have to compress a ways to really clamp down hard and a single piece clamp may not flex enough for the tube to grip the coupler.
I used to have a pic of the shaft before I installed it that showed what I did better. I’ll see if I can dig it up some time. Pretty basic, just copied the stock configuration.

That's just how I did my Hi Jumper steering shaft back in the 70s. Then several years later, steering shafts became available off the shelf. Those are intended to be cut to length and do the same to the end. _________________ Richard

That works. Until you need to replace the support bearing or take out the shaft for any reason. There's a Baja I'm doing some work on now that has the shaft welded to the coupler. But if you need to take the shaft out...It will have to be cut and replaced. _________________ Richard
