Hello There,
Im curently working on a 1584cc dual port with a Engle W100 with stock head, valves, etc...
Regarding of the valve springs, can you keep the stock springs and stock pushrods or should i go with a upgrade?
(The engine is for street purpose not racing) |

You can keep them, but they might limit the upper rpm range. _________________ Glenn

The shape of the cam determines what spring is needed. Unless you have a Cam Doctor or a lot of time to very carefully measure you need to ask the cam grinder what springs to use. Two cams with the same lift and duration can have drastically different valve acceleration and that is what stresses the springs. Cams that open and close valves very quickly require heavier springs but that reduces the life of the cam and lifters. Call the cam company.
Also be mindful of extra lift causing coil bind or various other issues. |

It’s a stock engine with an Engle 100, he doesn't need to take cam & valve springs 101.
Yes you could run stock springs. BUT i would not run your old original springs, at least buy new “stock” ones. _________________ "how am i supposed to torque the rear wheel nut to 250 ft lbs??? " - clonebug

I guess you have done this and know it works.
What is the lift of a stock cam? W100 is .420" valve lift with 1.1(stock?) rockers. How much valve lift does a stock engine have? It must be much less. The duration is fine if the induction can handle it. It seems like some people think it needs heavy duty springs especially if you are going to rev it. I don't know anything about ACVWs but when you make a cam change you need to check everything. No assuming.

So far i have found stock cam events but no literature stating lift, but ive seen a few posts of guys who have measured it and it varies from .285 to .304 at the cam. I’m sure theres some human error there as well as cam wear unless someone measured an original vw cam that was never installed.
No,I have not done that specifically, i dont like building stock size engines nor using cams that small. But yes I know itll work.
The acvw community tends to use higher spring pressures than about any other car community out there. I mean you’ve got LS’s with 80lb seat pressure out there and acvw with 2 - 3’s that, and more. I heard of one guy running 1000lbs seat pressure. ?? I dunno, just to get that kinda pressure is beyond my realm.
Anyhow , its a vicious cycle, higher spring pressure then means they go to larger and typically steel ( heavier) pushrods which then means the springs have that much more weight to control.
Ive run plenty of 110 / 120 size cams with single HD springs and stock pushrods that rev to 6k + and no issues. Were talkin 430 - 435ish lift ( with 1.1:1), so its a little more lift but not much.
