I have a 1600 single port thats pretty new to me and my car. I think it has a 30 pict carb on it. I have a fuel filter under the car as I don't like having one in the engine bay. But I had to keep using compressed air to every so often clean out the jet because it would lose idle. I decided to put a extra fuel filter between the pump and the carb. That seemed to help more, but still get the issue.
Is there something I'm missing here?
I had a DP with a different carb in my 63 before and never had this problem with just the one filter.Any help would be appreciated. |

using ethanol fuel? that stuff has nasty build up as a by product. also how recent did you replace the filter and what does the bottom of the fuel tank look like? _________________ TastyGarage |

try replacing the needle valve and yes -check the tank for rust. _________________ 1960 36hp sedan- 1978 adventurewagen

At which end of the car is the filter? On my 62 I have it in back, but in my Baja I have it up front. Having it up front can be a problem if the stock steel line is rusty.
Now, having a filter just before the carb should have fixed this issue.
Having said that, I remember one road trip in which my accelerator pump gunked up twice - both times requiring me to find a parking lot, take off the carb top, pull the dump tube/jet and dislodge the gunk in it so it would spray again. _________________ Andy T.

I have the 1 filter under the car next to the trans. I doubt it's the tank as I've had this car for 7 years and changed the engine late last year. Didn't start having this issue till this "new" engine and carb. I am using ethanol 87 blend. Thought about going to pure gas to see if that would help.
Today it was running fine. I got on the interstate for a short time and when I got off at the first light, it wanted to cut off. Had to give in gas to keep it running when idling. |

| What does the screen in your pump look like (assuming it has one)? |

| my best advice to work you way up from the root of the problem and see what you can find out from their. ethanol is a killer too. |

Which jet are you talking about and how often?
You also say, quote:
"Didn't start having this issue till this "new" engine and carb".
Are both the engine and carburettor new or just the engine?
What carburettor is installed as your initial post indicated you do not really know. There are quite a few versions of the Solex 30.
Is the fuel pump new?, have you checked fuel pump delivery and pressure?
Is the fuel pump screen clean?
More information is required before some form of diagnosis can be offered. |

Sounds to me like the new carb and possibly the new pump already had crud in them when installed, hence why you had no problems with the previous engine and filter setup but now you do.
I'd recommend a thorough cleaning of the carb and passages, and clean the pump as well if possible. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

| The engine and carb are new to me but are old. Carb is a Solex 30 pict-2. I have a filter between the fuel pump carb figuring the pump had crud in it. I've cleaned the pump screen before, but it made no difference. Guess my next steps is to replaces both fuel filters and try using pure gas next fill up. |

Where are you applying the compressed air? Pilot or main jet?
Might be time to really clean it and put in new gaskets/diaphragms, but re-use your old float valve-- new ones are usually junk. |

| I'd get a new gasket kit, take it apart, flush with carb spray, shake to make sure balls are loose and not stuck with crap, then blow out with air, and reassemble (there are a few tricks, search for threads on this). If you use a filter between the pump and carb, make it metal, and attach somewhere with a p-clamp, so it adds no mass to the inlet hose, which can pull out the fitting. |

| You need to look inside the fuel tank and then blow back thru the main fuel line and tank . This ethanol will loosen crud In the fuel tank and fuel line . Have you drained the fuel tank yet and what soft lines are you using . |

| you need to clean the jets with something better then just compressed air. when fuel sits for a while it turns hard in the jet. overtime the hole keeps getting smaller and smaller and clogs easier. get a set of welding tips cleaners and really ream out the jet. you will see white chalky powder come out of the hole and the hole will be a lot bigger then what you thought was a clean jet. |

Sounds like a good way to end up with a jet that is bigger than what it used to be, quite possibly ruining it for further use on the car. You should never use anything metallic to clean out a carb jet as the calibrated orifice is easily damaged. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

I've used bristles from brass and plastic wire brushes to poke through and clean out jets before, but I'm not sure if I'd really want to use anything harder than that, lest I score or alter the diameter of the orifice. But I also usually have carb/choke cleaner in a spray can handy, (and as I'm not in California, it's the good shit) which usually eats through most kinds of hardened deposits. _________________ Andy T.

welding tip cleaners are designed to be used on brass welding tips that have a" calibrated orrifice " too. a couple strokes through a dirty jet isn't gonna hurt anything. |

| It may be coming from the float bowl. ethanol seems to build up a tan sludge in the float bowl. |
