Hi,
I recently tried to get my 76 baywindow inspected. I rebuilt the engine last year. It's a 2.0 type 4, GD engine, hydraulic lifters with the original fuel injection. here are the videos i took before and after a valve adjustment today. It failed because the exhaust was loud and the mechanic told me he believed it was due to a exhaust leak. the clicking noise seemed like it may be a valve adjustment issue. I'm still not comfortable with the adjustment of hydraulic lifters.
So my question is does anyone think it might still be lifter noise, exhaust noise or something else? Also Im aware glass pack mufflers are supposed to be loud
I'm trying to add some videos I took this morning of before and after valve adjustment.

I'll go ahead and thread jack this, since I'm having this problem. I'm pretty sure it is coming from the #2 cylinder area based on the Stethoscope. Its a loud clacky sound.
This is on a fresh rebuild with about 1-2 miles on it. It has hydraulic lifters.
I've listened to the sounds off of Ratwell, and my ear isn't very good to tell them apart. Way too much heavy metal as a youngster.
Do I need to adjust the lifters on that side? I've read many different opinions but not sure what the final say is as there's lots of post around this type of issue. |

Were the lifters bled before installation?
Did you do the valve adjustment at TDC each piston?
How long between all this and then the initial start up? You might have a lifter that had bled down and needs to pump up. Usually idling the engine for 20 ins or so will do it.
Take off the sled tins under the pushrods tubes and start the engine and before it gets too hot get your hand in there and feel for exhaust leaks _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

if you get a cheap $3 stethoscope anywhere near an exhaust leak you will know it. There is no guessing. _________________

| I'm guessing a mechanics stethoscope from a flaps or something. I'm pretty sure the cheap medical one I have would melt before i heard anything. |

Here's my clacking.

Hopefully the lifter just needs to build up (it has oil and oil pressure). I didn't do the engine rebuild so I don't know how the lifters were put in or how they were adjusted. |

4kenobi your engine sound as a fairly long duration to it. It could be something scraping but I can't tell from the video but it has a duration to it. It could be a leaking exhaust at a port!
Evelrift your engine has a valve way out of adjustment! _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Yes, 4kenobi's noise seems kind of soft to be a lifter clank. I would guess it is an exhaust leak.
Evelrift's engine sounds like it has a bled down lifter. If the lifters were adjusted properly by the builder all it probably needs is some run time to get the lifter to build up. If it doesn't quiet up after the engine has run long enough to get the oil good and hot there are methods that can be used to encourage the lifters to pump up. |

my bus sounds like Evelrift's engine... distinct clicking noise.
seems to be #3 (drivers side firewall).
Ive adjusted the valves a number of times and it seems to persist.
I'm going to try again, while pushing the rocker down with my thumb per Dodger's advice.
Is .006 correct for the Exhaust valve on the 2.0 liter with pushrods ? |

The OP had hydraulic valves. The clearance you stated is for mechanical valves. So that begs the question, what kind of valves do you have? _________________ 1976 Westy (aka Tripod)

If the valve stems have worn to the point they are concave in shape, the 0.006" spec will leave the loose and noisy. |
