My 1800 type 4 engine has been sitting for a while, bus has been restored and the engine is quite weak. Seems to be a lot of blowby into the crankcase as the oil breather gives of a good deal of positive flow and "smoke". Hooking up the oil breather hose to the air cleaner causes
the engine to not idle. Compression is 90-100 psi on the 4 cylinders. Seems time to replace. I found a restored 1800 EC Porshe engine (which was a Luft-Jetronic). Can I use this with my factory dual carbs? Also, I suspect the distributor may not be correct. It's not vacuum-advanced, which I think is needed with the stock fuel delivery. Lots of questions.. |

it is more like which set of problems do you want. The blowby may be caused by valve guides too or even a cracked head. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Time your engine to 28° BTDC @3800+ rpms, with the hose(s) removed and plugged and see how it runs then.
My concern with a Porsche engine would be the compression ratio and what the cam grind is like. The Porsche guy might be happy with an engine that gets maximum torque at 5500 rpm and little torque below 2000rpm, but you as a bus owner will not. |

I agree. Research indicates the EC engine is low compression so will go another route. I should first know what engine I have and now know how the engine code can give me that. For some reason, I recall it was a 1700.
I'll start there... |

Any Type 4 engine can be built up to any size and any compression ratio, so at this point you can not go by the engine codes. What you don't want is compression so high it causes pre-ignition knock. |
