Hello...this just for fun..and to ease a bit of curiosity..
Here in the UK..this car is known as a wizard or wizard roadster.
Due to a question on this site I stated "wizard" and got a reply "don't know what a wizard is"... Of course..the penny dropped..the 1st guy ere in the UK purchased the kit from america, started a company converting beetles..he called the company " wizards n roadsters ". Therefore they are called " wizards".
So in say America..what do you call them ?...are they called speedsters..my own research their...lol
Russia..Brazil..Germany..France..do you know of one in your country and what's it called ???..

They were for years during their heyday in the 80s referred very clearly as Wizards here in the US as well.

Take a poll of those responding. If someone calls it something else- I'll bet they were born after 1990. I also would bet they can't answer without googling it.

They were unique in using later bodies with the short bonnet. Pick up any copy of VW Trends between 1986 and 1990 and you will see at least one- and usually from the UK.

Well in full disclosure. I'm the guy that asked what a "Wizard" is. Now I know Very Happy
To me it appears to be like a modern HebMuller. I hope you get the fiber glass sorted. Looks like a fun project.

To hitest, I was born in 1959. I just never heard that these were referred to as "Wizards"

I have heard of "Wizard"

If someone has a formal Wizard definition with some background, send me the info and I'll add it.

I've been a casual visitor to the Samba for quite a while and just noticed this thread. Having built a Wizard Roadster as my first car back way back in '84, I think I can shed a bit of light on where the name came from.

I think the source of the 'wizard' name came from the original company that produced them in the UK; Chris Boyle's Bournemouth based 'Wizard of Rods'. The actual kit was the 'Beetle Roadster', but he also did a van and Willys coupe conversion, as well a a range of other panels. When I went to pick my kit up he was working on a targa top version called the Wind Jammer. Chris went on to produce Speedster replicas under another company 'Street Beetle' and later Model A Ford hot rod kits.

I still have the original brochure and price list from when I bought my kit back in '84. Here's a scan of it:

I also still have my Roadster, which has gone through several rebuilds and updates over the years, evolving with my skills, enthusiasm and finances. I should be back on the road again this year after its latest reincarnation!
