Does anyone know the thread pitch on the EGR shaft that holds the tapered sleeve on I took it to my local metric nut and bolt dealer and he wasn't able to find any nut that would screw on It appears to be 5mm?

That is a swedged prevailing torque nut, so it's possible the threads have been damaged.
What's wrong with the old nut? It Should be tight to thread on.
You will probably need a tool to back-wrench the shaft to keep it from spinning.
Good luck,

I don't remember but I had a couple in my misc nuts and bolts bin. It isn't all that hard to find if you go to a descent hardware store that carries bins of different sizes. Home Depot or Lowes is probably not going to have it. _________________

No expert here but from my experience, you’ll find either a coarse or fine thread. Looks course from here _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

asiab3 That was a picture i found for an example I believe you're right and the threads were slightly stretched or damaged The EGR i have was never installed it was in a bag of parts missing the nut Last smog test it passed without EGR on it this time it failed with only 2200 miles on the same motor I can't find one person who will even look at it in my town So i'm doing everything i can figure to get it to pass in California or i may have to sell it out of state California Sucks for Vw's |

Put a 10 mm scale on it and count threads. I’ll guess 10 threads in 1 cm _________________ 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🍊 🍊 🍊 |

Which metric was the "fail"?
If NOX, then yes, EGR.
If CO or HC, it is within your ability to adjust.

Hey Chris, if you already failed smog, now would be the time to call the ARB to ask what to do about the lack of parts availability. They should exempt you from needing an EGR valve. _________________
