I recently purchased a Subaru swapped 72 beetle. The guy I bought it from was not the original builder on the car so I have been trying to price together everything as I go. Before I purchased the car, the owner decided to swap the battery that was in it. That is where the fun began. Since the battery swap the car will not fire. I have fuel and compression but no spark. I believe this engine/ECU are from a 2004 forester, but that is only because of the model of ECU. I know that it is a EJ25 SOHC. I have tested the leads feeding the coil(it is a four wire configuration) and have 12v on the main bit do not get a reading on the control wires. I believe the 4 wire coils have a built in ignitor so I have ruled that out. When I hooked up an OBD2 reader I got 4 errors but they all pertain to the EGR valve, which makes sense since this car has an EGR delete on it. Does anyone have any suggestions for a troubleshooting path to start on? |

Look around the battery area for a small lead that is supposed to be hooked to the battery, but is not. Maybe he didn't notice, and failed to hook it back up. Also, look for small leads that are corroded or not tight on the battery terminals. Are you sure the car ever ran before the battery swap? Maybe he is lying to you. Go to the salvage yard and buy a ECM off a similar car to the donor. If the key was on when he changed the battery, maybe he spiked the ECM. |

I am 100% sure the car ran, I drove it 3 days prior. I have been digging around for a broken wire and have not found anything yet. I spoke to the guy that actually built it a little while ago and found that it was a 2003 forester used as the donor car but the ECU that is in it comes up as a 2004. I’m not sure if there were any kinds of immobilizes used then that would prevent starting. I just ordered an ECU online. I’m still going to continue digging until it comes in. When I check the four lines feeding the coil I have power on one but nothing on the other 3. I am getting a ground on one of them that I assume is normal. Should any of the others have constant power or are they just communication lines? |

Unfortunately I lend lend much useful info but I have been looking into the same swap and have plans in mind. One thing I have learned is that there are a ton of inputs that will cause issues. Most guys who do that swap go with a standalone system for that reason. There's also more adjustability and tuning options to optimize power. |

I have been looking into the Microsquirt swamps as well just to help eliminate some of the problems with the factory ECU. I have a factory ECU in order in case that is the issue. Still trying to dismantle the loom far enough to start chasing wires and see if I find a break anywhere. |
