So I’m trying to get my rear brakes in order. I can not find anything on which wAy this piece goes. On one end the cut out is longer and wider. So which side goes on the shoe with the e-brake lever? Red or green.

Btw it is a 73 that I am making into a tin top camper

1973 is a mixed year. Some had 1972 brakes and some 1973 brakes. I'd put it back like it was when you took it apart. If you are assembling it from pieces then you may have a mixed set of parts. Also there should be witness marks on the old shoe and the lever that will give you an idea of depth. That said - the sides are mirror copies of one another. Some parts only fit one side, and that bar had many changes over the years.

Maybe someone else will be along who knows how it goes on your bus, also you can look in the gallery under "rear brakes" and there are lots of photos there. Some look close like it.

The wider slot goes on the shoe with the lever on it, that's why it's bigger.

Yeah my luck. This bus was some else’s project, so I don’t have a lot of how it was info. Not complaining but there in some ways is too much info here. Takes a lot of browsing to find a good “Chinese blueprint” of how it’s supposed to be. Hopefully someone will come across this post and set me straight. I would have never got it as far as it is without this website. Love this place.

Did you see Busdaddy's answer just before yours? Also, if you plan to own a 50 year old bus and restore it, better learn how to use Samba search and Google really well, and have the patience of Job when it comes to finding photos and answers. It took me about 5 minutes of looking at photos to find a couple like yours. Hang in there.

Thanks for the info. And response from bus daddy, that is what I suspected, but wanted some input from the folks that know.

That's a left-side bar, and the hump goes upwards. That way it fits
nice in your return spring retainer clip.
