What is inside the FI EGR?

Hello. I have a pin hole in my EGR box. If I shake it, the EGR sounds like it's full of magic beans (not rust particles). Anyone actually know what's in the box? Don't want to waste time welding up the hole if I have loose whatever and I'm not supposed to. My guess is converter like pellets of days past, but that's just a guess. Thanks!

It's a filter (or was at one time), the ones I've had open were full of coarse steel wool, like pot scrubber material.
