Hey Jimbo,
great work.
Concerning your picture:
check the flaps on the letout: It looks like there is an asbestos layer like on later heat exchangers. And it looks like the asbestos is already ruffled. You don´t want to breathe in asbestos when turning the heat on.
The problem is common on later heat exchangers (63 up) and might be the same here: When those flaps get old, the asbestos layer disintegrates.
Think about ways to neutralize it. Quick and dirty might be to paint it thickly with heat resistant paint to kind of glue the asbestos fibres together. |
Thank you Alex! I was wondering if the remnant bits were asbestos. I will get that taken care of before moving further along. They are not in good enough shape, plus I do not need anymore exposure than I have already been exposed to (General Contractor)! _________________ Jimbo

Thanks! It is how I was raised. Brought up in a construction family, my father was a stickler for details! There was only one right way and we always did it like that. My business is the same. Pretty much my life, where I have control of it - right? _________________ Jimbo

Thank you and I fully agree! It took all my energy to get out into the garage. Put in a rough 60 hours of work last week. This week and through clear to January is going to be the same! Love it, but Bug time is very limited. Especially as I have aged! Body just does not respond like it did 10 years ago! _________________ Jimbo

Curious about what you're gonna do there ... can we just go gasketless? I haven't found much on the forum (or anywhere else really) about what to use as an alternative.
Nice updates ... keep 'em coming! _________________ I've been known to be wrong. |

Thanks man! I try to keep them coming, but my work is in high demand currently. Heck, today I spent 6 hours troubleshooting a 4way switch issue. Turns out the electrician that swapped out this customers panels, fried some lighting circuit wires, IN THE WALLS! Took me 5 hours to find out which one in a 3 light, 3 switch, 4 way circuit, buried in one other lighting circuit and 2 other duplex circuits, was the issue! By the end of the day my mind was done!
I have not thought about it at all! Don’t be shocked, I typically am flying by the seat of my pants! I get into many situations, at work, that require quick thinking and creativeness! With that skill set, my first thought, is to incorporate a soldering mat or welding blanket material into a thin pliable seal. Maybe even the material (leather) welding gloves are made out of! Bet any of those would work! Thinking the leather may be the best band for the buck. It is just an endurance question, now. How long will leather hold up in that type of environment!
Thanks for tuning me into that! _________________ Jimbo

This sounds like an absolute nightmare ... You must have some serious patience.

Great ideas! It's a pretty thin seal, There's about a 0.050" gap it fits in. I had considered graphite but graphite dust is apparently pretty bad for you. _________________ I've been known to be wrong. |

Serious patience for trouble shooting odd stuff! That is what makes me the most money! No one likes trouble shooting. I do it a few times each day! Love using my brain and connecting dots, then proving I was correct!
Yep. Just about any metal is a serious health concern if ingested. Be sitting in your GI track or in your airway. It always is a bad thing. That’s why I was considering leather. It can be purchased fairly thin and is pliable. Holds up to heat okay and can be glued with nothing toxic, like Elmers! it really boils down to the heat. I have never measured the temps at that point in the heater system. So, that would be the thing to do. Hopefully not too high. _________________ Jimbo

That’s a fair question. I love Bugs! That is the simplest answer I can give you. I was born into a VW family. My first car ride was in a 1968 Bug and a 66 Bus ( I was less than a month old). I was driven across the country in a 68 Bug, when I was 3 months old. Daddy got stationed in Newport, RI. He was an Electrician in the Navy. My family had a Bug around till my mother passed away in 89. At that point, my Dad had a 73 Super Beetle and I had a 55 Oval, my sister had a 79 Rabbit.
I then got a job as an apprentice at a general automotive repair shop, which had been Dick Roy’s (an independent air cooled only repair shop) a few years earlier. The owner still used the old name and we all worked on ACVWs, minimum of 3 a day! Heck, if you know Mike Boyer. He was the parts guy at the front counter! He bought and sold SO MANY VW cars. Often times, I would give me a hand in them.
In 1990 I sold my 55 in 1990 for the money to get my life going. Long story there. I quit turning wrenches in 96 and gave up owning VWs.
Here is me and my cousin in front of Grandpas 65. I am on the right!
Then in 2013, with my eldest needing a car, I bought a 1970 Bug to teach her what a car was. She learned a lot! Adjusted valves, did a few brake jobs, a clutch job and body work. She learned how to drive in that Bug, a stick shift (she is one of just a few friends that know how to drive a stick shift.
That 70 Bug set off a chain reaction in me, deeply! Many memories, I learned, took place with a Bug in my life. The last thing I did with my mom, before she passed, was to drive to a VW Bug show in Irvine, where I bought a pair of semaphores for my 55.
Anyways, Bug are a part of me. Working on them brings so many memories. Driving them brings so many memories! Mostly, I enjoy working on them. There is something therapeutic about turning a wrench, remembering back to when I was young and I had nothing but a Bug! That another story.
Thanks for giving me something to think about! _________________ Jimbo

When you drive or get driven in a bug when you are young it saves a lot of memories for you. My first car was a Beetle pulled out of a field. I drove that car for years. There were a lot of firsts in that car. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Agreed! Me and you have a similar story! I found my 55 Oval in a corn field! I was skate boarding past this farm and (at the time) was actively looking for an Oval! I was shocked to see it there! Went straight up to the door and talked to the owner. He said he would get it out. To come by in a few days! The farmer had to cut the stalks down to get the car out! In a few days, my Dad drove me over to that farm and I bought the 55! I was 14 at the time! It was in 1985. VW were still everywhere! _________________ Jimbo

Let's not forget that unforgettable, unmistaken stench of the ACVW's interior. Gotta love it! _________________ .

That's only when the cats and rats get inside. They really smell good otherwise.
I prefer to focus on the good memories like that time the neighbor girl asked me for a ride home and we stopped between two fields and had a long discussion without words. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Yeah, I never learned sign language.
The smell of an ACVW's interior is a good memory for me. It's just so distinctive and brings back good memories. _________________ .

Yep! The years may fly by, but I fondly remember that smell! Especially on warmer days, when all that plastic in the interior was locked up air tight, just cooking! _________________ Jimbo
