I wish there was an auction page here like BAT where we could get a true idea of the value of the for sale cars. One can get a real car education from the discussions held there.

True idea of value has never, ever been assessed based on an auction-sold car. Auctions provide only the auction value of one car once- with just two interested buyers. Resale is much closer to establishing value.

If two people want the same car and jack the price to the heavens a true value assessment cannot be had. Two Boneheads with money do not a market make. Conversely when the same-caliber car comes up next week- maybe those two same nutjobs are now on vacation or are into Volvos instead.

Yep, I've said it before: "Auctions, the only place where you haggle the price UP!"

And yet it's those very "boneheads" that are wholly responsible for the current Type 2 market condition, which is ridiculous.

Might be a bit more than that. There are a lot of people who drive SUV's. The type 2 is closer in size than say, the type 1.

There are a lot of reason to have a type 2. I'd like to have one, any but they are unreasonably priced.

Indeed, semi-inebriated fourth-day bidders at Westworld have caused plenty of type 2 headaches. I'm comforted in knowing those guys represent a small percentage of buyers- and are rarely type 2 people. The rest of us still know the real field of values. Yes- the separation between good and excellent is divided by five digits now instead of a few hundred bucks- but we're all kind of to blame for that. Cool

Something like this can give you a good idea of true value:

https://bringatrailer.com/volkswagen/thing/

https://bringatrailer.com/volkswagen/beetle/

The auction results table gives a good idea of value and you can click on the spots to see what sold or didn't sell and for how much.

True value of anything is ZERO until you have a willing buyer/barterer to take it off your hands.

In fact, for the most part, the value is at a constant negative as your absorbing the cost of storing and maintaining it in hope to find that willing purchaser to take it off your hands.

It should be all too obvious that what one person may take off you hands for $10,000 another person wouldn't take off your hands for $500..

True value really boils down to TIME.
How much time do you want to possess the it before you move it along to the next possessor.

Sit on a car for 5yrs and how much time has that cost you vs. time with another car?

That made no sense at all. It sounds like you go to your insurance agent and say "my car has no value but I would like to insure it anyways" I'm strictly talking about assessed value for insurance purposes or if a person is trying to judge whether a seller is asking a good price or what a good starting price might be on a car someone is wanting to sell. Existential questions like what is the "true" value of something have no place here.

Well Don you're right- very indicative of 'true value'- at one Online Auction House

Now what's the 'true value' of the 100s of these cars sold every year privately? Exactly. Rather inconclusive and incomparable.

Auctions results accurately represent the following exclusively: Auction sold prices at their respective auctions.

In that case, the value is what ever carmax is willing to give you...

Bringing up this old thread again Sad

What's our VW's worth? Like others have said it's whatever was negotiated.

The folks who founded BAT are IMO, BRILLIANT!

The brilliant part of BAT is the their "Auction Results"

At some point I will probably sell the KG. most likely on BAT. Like the stock market, I believe BAT's specific model "Auction Results" is a great tool to decide to sell or hold. Insurance values vs. market values are very different but using BAT and other resources I can come up with an educated price.

Every other year, when it's time to reap my collector car insurance, I call them and ask what the max is for my cars. When I bought my 73 Thing, they would only insure it for 13K, this year it's up to 30K. The lady I talked to was surprised about this also, and my wifes 83 240D Mercedes will only insure for a max of 8K, kind of funny in a way. Both are showroom condition

In CT you pay personal property tax to the town your cars are registered in, tax based on 70% appraised value. Town does the appraising, unless you want to challenge them on it. Out of the three pre-80's cars I own, I pay 12 times more on the bus than the others!
