Does anyone know if someone makes a custom molded rubber matting, instead of carpet for the front of the Vanagon? Preferrably insulated.
Thanks! |

van cafe and go westy sell some mats that cover most of the front floor.
I read a thread on here about a guy commenting how he scored a rubber front floor at a u-pull-it yard. Not sure what that consisted of, but it sounded like it was a carpet replacement. _________________ 84 Westy

Trucks, commercial vehicles and the late L models came with full rubber molded interiors for the front , center aisle and the main cargo area. They are hard to come by so the german rubber floor mats are a decent option http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_484_128/german_vanagon_rubber_floor_mats.html
I have the rubberized interior in my truck and it is nice because I can take a hose to the interior if needed to clean it but I still have the german mats to reduce wear on them. |

yeah, that was probably me. Was a very lucky find, but wasn't one for sale in the classifieds a while back?
The rubber replaces the carpet, but I left the composition floor pads in place. I suspect in the original install the rubber went right on the steel floor.

If yes,do you know if there are 2 versions of the rubber mat?As I never seen a rubber mat been able to fit on top of them.
I tried myself to be sure.... |
The rubber mating comes in two versions....one the fits automatic and the other standard vans as the shifter areas are different.
The stock insulation used in the carpeted vans has to be eliminated for the rubber mats to fit properly.

I use adhesive backed thermotec without issue under them.

Yes, I have the stock "chipped" rubber composition pads under the black rubber mat. It fits pretty well except at the sides, just adjacent to the door openings (sides of foot well I guess you could say). The holes in the rubber mat are about 1/2 - 3/4" to high to match with the plastic bosses on the body.
Its not a problem really, you really don't notice the mismatch and the rubber mat stays in place fine.

PS pic was taken just after cleaning floor and treating with meguiers vinyl cleaner/conditioner. It did get dirtier _________________ '86 7 passenger syncro, converted to westy pop top, project still in progress

| I put in the molded insulation panels from a GL under my stock rubber mat. They helped the noise greatly but the fitting of the rubber isn't nearly as good as before. The noise reduction was worth it though. |

I don't expect you'll find an all-in-one insulated mat, but some sambanistas have added a layer of insulation under carpet/flooring
to prevent "hot foot syndrome"...(I know this is on my to do list before the next major summer road trip...)

I'd like to replicate this setup. I'm sure this is a really stoopid question, but what's the trick to pulling the plastic panel above the hump in this pic? I've looked at this thing for years, and occasionally tugged at it, and never really quite figured out the secret squirrel handshake needed to pull the infernal thing without bits flying off into unseen crevices. Any tips?
Casey
btw: if anyone plans to reproduce the factory rubber carpeting, please place me on the list for a group buy. _________________ Casey--

Looks super nice! exactly what I'm looking for...
Insyncro:
Do you have the same setup as ragnarhairybreeks? If so, how much do you want for a set? Are they all black? It's for a Syncro.
Thanks,

Alistair - You are right on. My Syncro was originally a Transporter van from the Finnish market and I've got this same rubber flooring. From the factory it was installed directly over the steel floor. I love it. Easy to clean and looks good to me.
I used to have Stinger Roadkill Floor Liner installed in between the padding and the carpet in my old MINI and once I can track down that material for a good price, I plan on putting it underneath my rubber flooring. The sound reduction material I had installed in the MINI was done by a pro audio shop and the entire floor of the car had four layers. 1)Top level Roadkill material (like Dynamat or Fatmat), 2)original carpet padding, 3)Roadkill carpet foam pad and 4) original carpet. It made a huge difference. It wouldn't be as difficult to do in the Vanagon since you have a lot more space to work with and it's easier to pull apart than the MINI. I had it professionally installed in the MINI because the front door panels and windows are VERY difficult to remove and I wanted to make sure all the door panels were covered with Roadkill material too. _________________ No more van. They are all known as transporters over there. You have a panel van which is a commercial vehicle and it should have the minimalist rubber mat. I prefer it in my truck along with the rubber mats to help it to last. |

Just grip near the top on both sides & pull it straight back...it'll come!
Yeah, it took me a while before I got it the first time...

Ok sir, thanks to your cajoling I marched out and tugged and nudged like a determined trooper. It felt like it was going to disintegrate in my hands, but ultimately I outmaneuvered the wily beast and it popped off in one piece. What I found is there is about 67 cents in spare change sitting in the open vent ledge. I have no idea how change can be inserted up there, but there it is indeed. I shall now insulate the holy $h!t out of the hump, and defray the total cost with my found bounty.
Interwebs hero, please take a bow... _________________ Casey--

Doka's and Vanagon panel vans (no windows in back) have rubber flooring.
I have a spare in my garage because my rubber floor has a tear in it.
The rear doka floor also had a separate rubber mat and a smaller mat at the door. These are also hard to get and not readily usable by the vans.. |
