My Dad passed March 1st of this year after a 3 year battle of parkinson related dementia. He was 85 years old and directly responsible for my love of VWs. He had a 71 super beetle that was his daily driver back in the late 70s. It finally blew the #3 spark plug out of the head and it was parked on the hill. I learned how to drive stick by stealing gas from the lawn mower and driving up and down the driveway. My love for all things VW started then. His next VW was a 68 baja, until it caught fire and was sold off for parts. He was a Navy veteran proudly serving aboard the USS Essex from 1958 to 1962. He later told us that his biggest regret was not staying in the Navy. He was always there whenever I needed him. From helping me pull a motor, to installing a pocket door to anything financial related. He will be missed beyond words. This is a pic of a pic from 1984? but you can see him smiling after we got that car started for the first time.
His old super

I recycle old cars and parts, other than when I rot, that's as Green as I am going to get.
Thanks to my Tesla driving neighbors, I feel more relaxed driving my SUBURBAN and old VW's.
Everything sounds good on paper! |

Change a few names and places and that was my Dad... 30 years ago. Wow! can't believe it's been that long and now I am at the age he was when he died!
Yes, I still miss him... just not quite as often. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

I'd wonder what percentage of us older VW owners got our passion for VW's from our Dads. Mine came from my Dad as well.

I appreciate the thoughts. It's just so weird going to the house and him not bring there. My mom just turned 85 a couple of weeks ago. They were together since they we're 16 and married at 21. They both supported my car habit when I was living at home. One of my favorite pics from back then is looking at all the cars strewn all over the hill looking out their dining room window. I'm glad I'm only a half hour from her. Dementia is a vicious disease, robs you of so much. I'm grateful he is finally at peace.

Our condolences for your loss.
7 years since Dad passed at 93. Grieving is a process of a year and more, and it will come up on you quickly when you donβt expect it. I visited his old place of work the other day and memories flooded back, all good.
Hang in there. The end of dementia is a blessing. _________________ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ π π π |
