Hello guys! I was scrolling through some vintage ads and found this special horn ring. It is labelled as “signal ring”. I never knew beetle steering wheels had this feature. I wanted to clarify something: What regions and years was this accessory available??

It's an accessory full circle Type 3 horn ring made by VDM. It was also marketed to other VW models

Aircooled Accessories in the UK pops out a reproduction of it. I have one on my 60. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

Thanks for the quick replies. I had another question. Will beetles have the pass signal from the factory even without the special ring?? I swear it doesn’t say anywhere in the manual about that feature and it is something completely new to me

I think "signal" and "pass signal" are just polite terms for "horn." All VWs had horns.

Thanks to everyone for the replies! I was asking because I have seen that Porsche 356s have that feature where the upper part of the horn ring serves as a pass signal.

Looking at that ring from the back- it makes contact with the grounding ring for the full 360 degrees. Thus, if held down anywhere- the polite passing horn becomes a hellish first shot at rage. Perhaps it's referred as a passing signal in the sense that it is not as comfortable to hold down the ring above the spokes (a farther reach too)- but any of us can push the lower ring down until the car runs out of gas or someone punches us. _________________

Good point, there are some earlier VW accessory rings that do that.
I think Split Bug / Oval Window Bug time frame. (Pre-1958)
I don't know the details myself but they have some extra wires and contacts to do either what you described or other things _________________ How to Post Photos
