I have a 69 bay window bus with sliding doors on both sides and a small pop top camper I am wondering how rare it is, I have never seen one in the states before. Does anyone know how rare it is or what it is worth, it is in good shape , has a 1600 dp and runs and drives great. Yes it is original, not a conversion, I will post pictures soon hopefully.

Is it a factory camper?
A converted dual sliding door panel?
Yes, pictures would be nice. _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |

I would think that a camper would be pretty out of the ordinary if it was in fact produced that way, although I have read a couple threads in the split forum about some split window double door campers that were made. _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |

You don't have double sliding doors. Chrystler invented those in the early 90s. I heard it on the commercials.
Chrysler also invented the minivan in the 80s... so for that matter you probably don't have a bus either. |

Chevy invented the third door in the extended cab pickup right around then also. LOL _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |

and the third brakelight wasnt developed until the late 80s....
the double sliders seem to be much more common on panels. my guess, and its just a guess, is that panels were used for ambulances and that is the reason. i have seen a few dd slider kombis too. here are some dd panels:

Eli, AFAIK 68 or later US model bay window busses never came from VW/Westfalia with a small poptop. Those were used on some of the split window westies in the 60s. I've never heard of them on euro westies either, but who knows. There is a guy on the type2.com list that knows everything there is to know about westy configs, including the euro versions. His name is Vince Molenaars or something like that. If you post asking for m-code interpretation, he will reply.
My 70 bus has a later style poptop. It didn't come from the VW factory that way, and was never near the westy factory, but it sure doesn't mean I love it any less.
Got pics of your bus? I think I saw a white bus like you describe being sold on samba a few months ago, but I don't remember the poptop. I imagine the dual sliders would make for a nice breezy camping arrangement. |

I saw a bay on eGay once that had double sliders and had a cut out in the back for a "power cord". The seller said something about it being rare because VW was experimenting with an electric motor for propulsion. I thought it was pretty cool with the double sliders and pondered buying it since it was in Kansas, not too far from my moms house.
Anyone ever hear of this kinda thing? _________________ 72 Super Beetle

The Tennessee Valley Authority (I'm pretty sure) ordered some DD busses ordered for electrical/battery operation. There were some panels and some standards. A fellow I know down in Atlanta used to have one. The interesting thing was that they still had a gas tank for the gas heater for heat...pretty cool. _________________ <---Air Cooled Search & Rescue Team - STICKERS & T-shirts for sale!

Anyone ever took a single slider and added tracks to the opposite side for a slider? I just bought a super rusty blue '72 pannel van and think it would be nice to have Dual doors. Some one has got to have done somthing like this, anyone know where i could buy the tracks? |
