My original pop top roof from Winnebago is still in good shape, with no visible cracks, though I am sure it is only a matter of time for the inevitable to happen.
I have previously built myself a wooden core fiberglass kayak using plans and materials from Cheseapeake Light Craft, and I am pretty confident that I could build myself a replacement wood and fiberglass pop top roof that would keep the same basic aesthetic of the original, but without the cracking, durability, or load bearing problems. Maybe even with some improvements like recessed led lighting and a modern vent/fan integrated.
Obviously, the time to do such work is while my current roof is in good condition.
Has anyone else attempted this? Any tips or plans you could share?
The only alternatives I can think of are patching/repairing/living with a cracked top; spending +$10,500 on a Colorado Campervans pop top (and I am not a big fan of the aesthetic). Am I missing something to consider?
I hope this is not a repost... I searched the forum a bit using different keywords, and did not find anything related to self-building a replacement.
Thanks for any advice, plans, or suggestions!

I'm in the same situation but for a custom application. If you search for DIY RTT on youtube, there's a fellow named Patrick Remington who's built a roof using boat building background. Very useful... There's also a FB page called DIY Roof Top Tent Community that may come handy.
I'll be building my own roof but still in the planning stage. I use my van regularly in sub-zero temps so the roof will need to be insulated. Anyway, hope this helps!

I don't think it's inevitable the Winnebago top will crack unless you try to put a roof rack on it. My thought is a small roof rack mounted on the rear of the cover over and behind the hinges could work for extra cargo capacity.
Best of luck to you . . . . _________________ '68 Bus in West Germany, 1977-1979
