My 69 beetle starts fine, idles fine but when I accelerate, even a tiny bit, it coughs and gasps. It has been running well until now. I filled the tank the day before.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Pat

Sounds like the carburetor's "accelerator pump" is not functioning properly. This is a nozzle that should start to shoot extra fuel down the carburetor whenever you open the throttle.

Also sounds like a carburetor/distributor mismatch.

Add the two together and you get Brick wall

Thank you. I will look into the pump. Any advice on how to test this?

Pat

Yeah - take the air cleaner off. You will see a nozzle or two toward the top of the carb. When you work the throttle, you should see a stream of gas coming out shooting down the throat of the carb. Should be a nice spray.

But you said it was fine until now, correct?

This is absolutely the only thing you did before it started acclerating poorly? You did not touch or replace anything at all?

Yeah, I think I see where this line of inquiry is going as I've twice over the years been affected by contaminated fuel - both times I strongly suspect diesel got mixed in with gasoline

Sorry for being so late in responding ... yes, I have done no repairs at all. Been driving it all summer. Just jumped in the one day and as I was driving it began acting up. Idled it in first gear all the way home.

Super easy to check!

Plugged up acceleration circuits are very common. Probably the most common complaint with carburetored cars.
