I'd visit the VW Museum, and the factory.
Good luck w/ the Barn find, I think you would have more luck if you had some leads on Buses, just cruising around looking might not get you a split Bus.
6 weeks is barley enough time to see Germany, unless you going just to Split Bus hunt, there is so much to do & see.
I took over 750 pics in 17 days this summer.
And if the wife/girlfriend has a problem w/ the trip- Get a NEW one !! _________________ Tom

Not to rain on the parade, but unless you're going to a show while you're over there, you'll see fewer air-cooled Volkswagens in Germany than you will here in the USA. I think I maybe averaged one sighting per day when I was over there this summer, and it was nothing exciting when it happened, just the occasional super beetle or bay window bus. The odds of an Auslander from Amerika going over and finding parts or cars is even worse. Even if you find something it'll probably be as expensive as it would be buying out of the classifieds here.
Wolfsburg is worth a visit, So is the BMW Museum in Regensburg, and Germany has several smaller auto museums scattered around the country that are all worth a look and always have a nice VW section. My absolute favorite museum in Germany is the Deutches Museum in Munich which is a huge science and technology museum which has everything from cars to trains and planes, to electric power plants displayed inside:

The German Railway Museum in Nuremberg is also pretty good:

If you stop focusing on VW there is neat stuff sitting around. Keep an eye open when you go past farms, especially in Bavaria, and you'll see cool junk out behind the barns. I spotted one farmer that had 5 or 6 old WWII US Army Jeep trailers that he was using to haul feed to his cattle, and the old junk tractors are pretty interesting. Farmers are the same everywhere-- they never throw anything away. |

Coad is right. There really aren't very many VWs around over there. When I was there about five years ago, I had to keep my eyes peeled to see any. We did have one pass us on the Autobahn though.
Take lots of pictures and if you have video capability, use that too. I took a lot of pictures when I was there and I am glad I did. We also took video both times we were there and it's fun to watch it again.
I have never been to Wolfsburg, but it is something I definitely want to do one day. I have heard that it is really cool, so it's probably worth a visit.
If you are a VW toy collector, you will be able to find lots of cool toys over there. I came back with a suitcase full after being there for only two weeks.
Just have a good time and enjoy yourself! _________________ VW-less right now...looking

I lived there for 2 years, not in Munich but in Wuerzburg, about 2 hours northwest. Oktoberfest is a must do.
I too only saw a handful of old VW's; mostly only Beetles. There laws are so strict on pollution that the old beetles are not wanted because they leak a little oil. (some do not all). I your car leaks oil on the street you will be fined and have to clean it up.
There is alot of castles to see. Garmisch/Paternkirsh(sp) is a great resort area with skiing on Zugspitz. Nuremburg has a load of history. Don't forget about the concentracion camps, they are a solemn place to visit. I got chills thinking about being there.
Oh and Ausfart is not a city in Germany, if you don't know you will see. _________________ 0 to 60 in a neck snapping 4.6 MILES!

I'd visit the Bodensee area (Lake Constanz, the Swiss call it) - that's my all time favorite area of Germany: Pretty area, lots to see, great beer.
The Zeppelin factory is still in business and you often see a Zep being tested over the lake. Be sure to check out the Zep museum, drive around the alps and Neuschwanstein castle. |

The factory cool is really cool, I definitely recommend that if you have the time...and the museum is great - go on a day when there aren't a lot of people there, and you can get a much closer look at stuff!

And if you are in Germany, don't forget to take a ride in one of the legendary cyclic elevators (Paternoster) that only exist in the EU! In Germany there are over 200 existing. If you need a list to find one close to your route, visit:
