I know I need a set of rubber seals between the accordion hose and body like these.
https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-111-819-945-PR
But do I need another set to keep the tubes from melting when I connect them straight to the heater box?
I just took off the original rusty asbestos tubes and I am installing new accordion tubes and heater boxes from bus depot.

I’m guessing VW had the cuff there for a reason and it’s either to help seal the connection or to keep from melting the plastic or both. I made my own cuffs using high temp silicon mat I bought off of eBay.

There is a set on each end of the tubes, you need four bushings total. |

To this day I still don't know why one of the bellows is supposed to be short and the other long. I'm using two the same length and they work fine. That said, those fellers get up to about 300F as I recall. Make sure nothing in them will melt at that temp. This is all that was left of an aftermarket part that was supposed to be a replacement.
Also the white stuff on the original metal inserts is asbestos. The vanagon cuffs are silicone. Some are grey and some orange. 251-255-393 d

That's a Type 4 bus only thing… OP has a Type 1, which uses the same length on both sides. (211 255 387) As for why VW changed it? I have no idea. Similar lengths fit just fine, but a right (388) usually won't stretch to fit on a late bay left side.

I use silicone hose reducer 51 to 60mm it will fit just fine. wall thickness is about 5mm
60mm hose cut to lenght will fit just fine too.
edit: this is for a 73 maybe the inner diameter will be different

I never thought of those..
I already put a set on my intakes since the s*&tty ethanol gas eats a pair about every 2 years.
I feel bad because when I see you are Quebec all I can think of LetteryKenny and all that “good fishing in Kyu bec....”
Thanks for the tip on the silicone boots. |

still don't get why one needs to be 2" shorter. The distance is about the same with a tape measure. I'll have to check it out again when I put the engine back in. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Without the insulation ends, the plastic pipe ends will melt. I swapped out the asbestos cuffs for vanagon silicone ones and made replacement liners.

Those short seals that CIP1 (and others) sell will not protect your accordian tubes from melting by themselves. They are just too short. You
can see that the outer black plastic is exposed to the hot air if that's all you use. If the engine gets really hot, you
could end up like the guy in this thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8023303 _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

It matters on a type 1, the offset of the cylinder banks (crank journals) makes the trip to the body longer on one side, most type 4 systems make up the difference with longer metal tubes on one side. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
