Hi there - I need some help figuring this out thank you in advance!!
My 1600 started to run really rough, backfire etc. when I started to trouble shoot and take the plug wire off of the coil it basically broke apart without any effort see below. I bought this car in November from a classic car dealer it's a 74.
the wire says CB performance 8.2 mm and i suspect the plug to the coil was "rigged" to fit it looks like it was bent so it would work otherwise I don't know how it would of been bent.. I can't ID the distro/coil nothing I've googled so far has matched. Any help figuring this out is greatly appreciated.
Also I've noticed OIL in the bottom of the distro cap, I cleaned it, (this was prior to it running back) but the oil is back(no pictures of it, but it's definitely new from when i cleaned it). I first noticed it when it drips out of a hole in the bottom of the cap onto the pressure sender - any idea on why this is happening? doesn't seem normal to me.
Thank you! |

bad bushings?
Remove the distributor and see if there's play in the drive at the bottom.
Call CB and talk to their tech staff. They know their product best. _________________ Glenn

As far as repairing the end of the spark plug (coil) wire... here are a couple YouTube videos that walks you thru the steps. While it is best to use the proper crimping tool, as long as the crimp has a good grip on the insulator and the center conductor is in contact with the metal end it should work. Just be sure to get the proper end for your plug wires. Either straight or 90-deg.

thank you for this I did find similar videos and I repaired the wire but the tip was in pretty bad shape I did what I could(looks like this has happened before probably) and the engine is still running rough so I just went ahead and ordered new wires so we'll see if that fixes it. |

For future reference... the stock VW Beetle plug wires have rather unique connectors at the spark plug ends (push onto the small threaded studs at the end of the spark plugs). But on the distributor cap / coil ends are standard. The posts are either male (HEI style) and look like the tips of spark plugs or they are female like the stock VW distributor cap.
The terminals for these two types are fairly standard and you can probably find them at your FLAPS. There are 90-deg and 180-deg (straight) versions. Just get the proper type for use with your boots and will fit over/in the posts.
