|
|
Okay, I searched old threads but could not find the exact answer to my question. My 67 SO42 Westy originally came with the child's cot and still has the brackets but the cot itself is MIA. I know from the Type 2.com archives that it is supposed to have round, solid, black cot poles, and I know their lengths. I have ordered new cot fabric from Dawn at PLF and am patiently waiting for it to arrive.
But I need to fabricate these poles I guess. I have never seen a split cot in person and am a bit at a loss to imagine how a round bar hooks securely into these angled cot brackets. Are these poles solid steel or tubular? Can anyone steer me to a resource that shows detail on split cot poles/brackets, or can one of you fine people who has an original cot snap a few photos and post them? Any help would be quite appreciated.
Thanks!! |

I have seen the cots, but I don't have a picture. they are round hollow tube stock that is pinched flat and folded on the ends. |

to post pictures in the forums, just go to the pic in the gallery, click on the pic itself, then the pic will re-apear just by its self. copy the URL and put it inside of the following: [img][/img] so it should look something like:
[img]https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/130449.jpg[/img
with a square bracket at the end. (if I make it look exact, you won't see the text, you will see the pic)
I went ahead and put all of your pics in this post.

Thanks Lind!
I tried doing that with the "img" button and putting one on each end of the link, but it didn't work for some stupid reason and just listed all the urls. Maybe I didn't have the links spaced... or maybe I"m just stupid, but anyways.. thanks! |

Find a pair of 68-early 69 bay bars. They are 56 1/4" long, round and black. You can cut down and weld these for split bus bars. The front bar is 47" long and the rear bar is 55 1/4" long. |

it is kind of buggy when you try to use those buttons to make it work. (typing it in is a lot easier anyway) none of those buttons work for me anyway because I surf with javascript turned off. some stuff doesn't work without javascript, like annoying popups. |

There's a repo boot to keep the poles in on ebay right now. $25 shipped.

Thanks everyone for the help! This is exactly what I needed. What a great community. Flipseat, you kick ass, bro!! My 4 year old daughter thanks you in advance for her cool cot!
If I happen to find a pair of early bar bars, I'll use them. I'm a lot more likely to just buy tube stock and fabricate the whole thing at the local high school metal shop.
I wonder if there would be a market for these, if I made several sets? Anyone?
Dstefun, when I ordered my cot fabric and bug net from PLF, I noted that she also sells these little boots both on her site and on ebay. They seem like a waste of money to me. $3 at the fabric store for some coated green canvas, and my mom can sew that up for free.
I'll post pictures as I make the first set of poles. |

Heya Woody... no problemo. I like to help out when I can. If you do end up fabbing up some poles, let me know as I know I can move a few sets. They'd also make great gifts for a few of my bus friends that are standing up in my wedding If you do find a set of originals, jump on em. I've seen cots sell for 50-120ish? Thats when I see them... I don't see the split poles very often. I have a nice early bay window cot with the black round poles, but I think the ends are different?? So cutting one of those down might look a little strange. If you want, I can take measurements of the poles and tell you where all the bends are and everything. If you can make them close to the originals, that'd kick arse.
Most of the split cots I've seen have been "bend to fit". Each are just a hair different so you have to tweak them to fit your bus nicely.
Also, if you have safaris, using a cot can be a hassle. I have to disconnect my outer two sliders (take out the wingnuts) on the safaris to get the front pole in.
Heya Shelby! I should be able to get off work and we'll cruise down to see you guys on the 10th! |

I'd likely also be interested... The dog loves the one in the '69 fat chick..
So one seems natural for the '67 kombi... _________________ Air and Water are needed to survive,

Chris, I'm also down for a set, if they're not too pricey!
Did you have any luck with the curtain rods?
I might be able to help,

Lind is going to dig through his parts stash. He says the early bay curtain rods are made of the same aluminum extrusion, and thinks he has one or two bay rods. I can use that and bend three to match the two that I do have.
Isaiah is going to get exact measurements on his cot poles, then I'll go looking for material. I think I'll make a dozen sets over at the high school this spring. I'll just ship them in raw steel treated with Picklex so people can paint or powdercoat them after they have done a trial fitting and "adjustments" for their own bus. I'm going to powdercoat mine since they tend to get banged around. I can't imagine these costing very much to make; I figure my time in the metals shop is worth $25 an hour. Mild steel tube is cheap and once you get the hang of making them, it shouldn't be too tough to make several. At least I expect so.
I have no idea where to come up with the pole brackets though. That part is aluminum and would have to be cast. Not anything that I have any knowledge on, but I see them for sale fairly cheap here on the Samba from time to time. |

Would you consider using ones from a bay? I think... maybe I just might have a set... _________________ Air and Water are needed to survive,

the bay brackets are different from a splittie, however the brackets that are found on the inside of the fiberglass "rack" on a poptop bay are very similar to the splittie ones and there are like a dozen on each poptop bay. |
