Where is a good place to get kits and is there a brand that's preferred?
The searches I found mostly really old posts. I saw Royce and Walker brands??
I have a Solex 34/3, 71 Bus. Also, I read about reusing old floats rather than new, etc. Any advice would appreciated.
Thanks!! _________________ "Want a little peace of mind, grab the lowest branch and start to climb"

old hard shelled black plastic foam floats absorb oils from the fuel, get heavy and sink. You don't reuse those. Only reuse the brass or hard plastic hollow floats if they haven't leaked. _________________

The Walker and Royze brand kits offer good diaphragms and gaskets. (Walker and Royce are great, too though, if you're into that.
MAKE SURE you use the correct large upper gasket for YOUR carburetor. The kits come with gaskets and parts for all VW single carbs, from 28pci to 34pict4 and everything in between. You will have leftover parts and gaskets; do not worry.
I prefer to source NOS needle valves from classified ads or eBay, or reuse the old valve if it is not having fits. Several new valves have given me problems over the last few years.
Good info here if you really want to do it right:

There is also some info floating around about checking the flatness of the mating surfaces, and checking the throttle shafts for wear. Can't find it at the moment…
Good luck,

How about rebuild kits for Solex Duals?
What type is recommended in 2020? _________________ Late 1973 Bay w/a transplanted 914 Engine |

I bought an Eichlin kit from Napa but was not happy with the included float needle valve because it is dimensionally different from the one that was in my car, which, come to think of it, could very well be the wrong one.
And the new valve's needle, when pushed in, would not come back out, even with the needle pointing down. Yes, it could be just the one, but I got it, so I'm mentioning it. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Both Walker and Royze have been a solid B- in recent years…
Save EVERYTHING old. A clean bucket of Berryman's carb cleaner might be nice for the existing needle valves, lest you have to use the crap that comes with the kits… I would use existing valves until they prove themselves bad in this case.
As with the single carbs, the gaskets and diaphragms are mostly good for the duals.
Some dual carb kits come with a throttle body gasket that is too thick/narrow, and can prevent the throttle plate from fully returning to your perfectly set idle stop screw. This will manifest as a "hanging" high idle as the left throttle body triggers the vacuum advance which triggers the mechanical advance which triggers more vacuum advance which… Ensure both lower gaskets clear the throttle plate, no questions asked.
Working cutoff solenoids are NLA. Collect used ones whenever possible.
Good luck!

Yes, I ended up using the one that was already in the carb. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”
