Just adding another fuel line break to the data base....

Running down the hiway at 50 when I no longer could hold speed and the engine died. Of course a restart was impossible. Out of the van to take look - smelled of gas, but no visual confirmation. Anyway, a tow home and a helper to crank - fuel breakage was obvious and completely broken. Fortunately, no fuel spill when not cranking. More details when fixed sometime latter this week. idk when the lines were replaced - visually they looked good on a cursory check last year when acquired.

for me, on my van the bulkhead fitting cracked. that caused my fuel leak. I simply bypassed that fitting, ran the fuel hose under the bulkhead, no need for that failure prone fitting.

You want to use Gates Barricade Hose that carries a >=225 PSI rating for use with fuel injection, the hose should say 30r9 on it. Don't let anyone sell you 30R6, 30R7, or the low pressure Barricade, you must see the 30r9 rating on the hose. There are metric equivalents as well, but the Gates is easy to find and a known product.

You want proper clamps for fuel injection use as well, they should not be the cheese grater style, but smooth on the insides. You will want to change the short pieces of hose on the injectors as well. There is a section of larger diameter hose between the tank and the fuel pump. 30r7 hose is supposed to be okay there as there is little pressure before the pump. I prefer to use what I can get from my VW specialty shop, but I can't give you specs on it.

idk when the lines were replaced -

you had a line split, spray gasoline, and still have a van. consider yourself very VERY lucky. skip buying the $Billion Powerball ticket as you've already won the lottery. change all your rubber lines, eliminate the plastic firewall connector, and rest smug that you are a very lucky person indeed.

Wildthings give the exact line and clamps you should buy.

from this point on, you'll KNOW when your lines were changed and be able to squeeze a fresh section of line to test for suppleness. when they start getting hardened, change them again. it won't be decades, but merely years. this is a burden of Vanagon ownership that simply must be done. lecture over but hopefully another new owner is paying attention.
