I have a 86 Vanagon, I'd like to check/adjust the valves, it has hydrolic lifters. I want to do this, becuase compression on one cylinder is low.
How do i go about checking the lifters to assure that the valve closes properly? I hope that my low compression is only a valve issue.
thanks dave |

My mentor Karl has taught me this in regards to the valve lash...Ignore Bentley manual and their two turn adjustment, unless you want low compression
Owning a bunch of these vans, I have gotten to know the valve adjustment intimately
I use a remote starter, click the starter until the exhaust valve starts to go down, then adjust the intake, I only use 1/2 a turn when I feel the spring depress on the lifter, when the intake goes down and comes back up a bit, I adjust the exhaust
again, 1/2 a turn, after going over the valves a bunch of times, I fire up the van, let the valves settle in, yeah, with the valve covers off...
again, I check things, making sure i'm only a 1/2 turn or less on adjustment
I do have one 1.9 that has 150lbs of compression but needs lifters, i have that one loose, they click and clack a bit, but the engine runs good. I used a compression tester, and as I backed out the adjustment, the compression went from 30, to 90 to 150 lbs
