Hi,
I have a 1974 VW Thing.
The engine bay and front trunk are still painted in the original Avocado Green, the rest of the car was resprayed white years ago by the PO.
The car is partially in primer, it shows about 1/2 of the respray white paint. A small amount of rust was repaired (well, if you don't include floorpans that were replaced) with metal and bodywork completed and sanded.
Everything is ready for paint and the interior has been taken out of the car.
I would like to keep the engine bay and front trunk untouched, in its original paint.
I am not looking for a competition paint job but nice presentable work in a single stage enamel.
What do you think is a fair price to pay to have it resprayed
in its original color? I am in the Balt-DC area.
Thanks.

No idea about today's prices, but I suggest that you do yourself a favor, and remove more stuff. The door handles, tail lights and turn signals, the folding windshield pins and sockets, bumpers, etc. all come off with very little effort.
Even if you are not seeking perfection, you will be glad that you spent a little extra time in preparation.
Good luck, Mondshine |

I would go a little further and suggest you will hate yourself if you paint that as is.
I'd take off everything mentioned, plus loosen and gap each fender (at least) and grind the NATO tangs off the right front fender's headlight bucket area. Reason: You can expect $800 either way. But Your 800 can buy an okay spray job or something that looks like $199- based solely on 3 hours of better prep. Further- when you bring a car into a shop (I'm assuming you're going to Maaco- type places) with tape over everything instead of taking your time in removal- how can you expect the painter to care any more than you? _________________

I would spend at least $1500 for someone to finish the prep and do a proper paint job. About $300 just for the paint supplies would be about right, which would include a cleaner, primer, paint and clear coat. _________________ '56 pan Dune Buggy since '69

I suspect whoever ends up painting this will want to re-primer it, because they don't know what kind of paint or primer was originally used. This will increase your cost.
I'm also going to echo the previous comments and strongly suggest you remove the headlights, marker lights, door handles, rear view mirror, and bumpers. |

Thanks.
I have taken the advice to remove everything, except the windshield.
I don't want to get into pulling out the windshield and gasket. I will replace them both at a later stage...they can tape around the gasket.
This also gives me the opportunity to replace all of the original exterior gaskets around these items.
Looking at it in hindsight, it was very little effort and the right thing to do.
Thanks, I will post pictures when it is done. |
