1974 Type 1 Standard, L20B Brillant Orange, with M568 Factory Tinted/ Heat Absorbing Glazing Green Glass and Port Installed Air Conditioning.

Type 113841
Original AH engine
Mfr Date: 10 January 1974
Manufactured in Emden, Germany
Delivery Date: 13 February 1974
Delivered in New Orleans
Special configuration: Y25, M197, M568, M671

* this information was obtained from my applied for/ received VW Birth Certificate from Volkswagen Classic Parts.

This history on this 1974 doesn't go too far, it's unknown, as I did not receive any documentation with the car, no operators manual, no repair receipts, nothing except the original key and a bill of sale.

I bought this car last year in August, found on Facebook Market place, my wife turned me onto it. I immediately started searching for VW cars and parts (it's an illness), I found this car advertised as a 1965, I knew it to be much later, but sent a message, got an immediate response, agreed to travel up to North Dallas to the property it was located, I am posting those pictures for you all to see. We agreed to a price, paid a few hundred in cash and I pulled it home with my Eurovan, after I installed some fresh wheels and inspecting/ service the front wheel bearings.

Clean up, Tear Down, Repair

I spent the most of September and October working on the 74, it started to really shine, I found it surprisingly solid, to include the original L20B Brillant Orange exterior paint. The floors were very rusty due to the window seals being rotted allowing water to seep in, but it was only the floors which had rust, the heater channels, door pillars, engine bay, windshield groove, spare tire tray, and all quarter panels all the typical places, were perfect. Also, the car is accident free, with all its original aprons, fenders, hood and deck lid. Only a light incident on the passenger front fender is visible. The interior was all original, headliner was so so, the grey felt carpet and original 50/ black leatherette, it had an aftermarket Sparkomatic radio with front Kraco door speakers, cut into the basic door panel, you know the factory no pocket types.

Allot of Simple Green, my pressure washer, and 3M compound and polish produced great results. I also order a set of late model Danski heavy gauge half pans. A full set of Tar Boards, package tray sound deadening, and I used a aluminum roof product for the doors, quarters and package shelf (Quick Roof), works like DynoMat.

November was focused on the suspension, engine and completing the interior

I purchased a set of Porsche 914 Sport Wheels 5 1/2 x 15 et 40, I wrapped them with Pirelli P4 195/60/15 88T tires. I went with Bilstein HD shocks all around, replaced all the ball joints, installed Ghia disc brakes, replaced with hard stainless steel lines and braided soft Stainless Steel lines, all new rear wheel cylinders, hardware, and shoes for the rear drums.

Interior wise, I went with a Sewfine custom carpet set, with hump covers and evaporator drain provision for front firewall. I installed a set on TMI door panels, no pocket type, I went with a Retrosound radio with dual cone speaker, added an NOS wood panel kit to the dash, a ISP/ Flat-4 GT steering wheel and an early VDO rubber dual gauge mount with CSP gauges ( oil temp & psi). The original black rubber mats were cleaned up and reused. To complete the interior I repaired the cushions on the front seats, used a low cost cover in stock black leatherette vinyl (temporary seats).

The engine was removed, all tin was blasted and repainted in semi- gloss black, I retorqued engine hardware, replaced seals, replaced the intake manifold, new carb, SVDA distributor, Porsche 912 ignition wires, NGK plugs, new Bosch Blue Coil, and a Vintage Speed stainless steel Sport exhaust. I kept the engine warm up system in place, and repainted the stock heater boxes with hi temp primer/ gray paint.

December the 74 Bug was nearing completion, got the car out on the road, test drives.. I focused on engine fine tuning, rebuilt the factory Solex PCT 34-3 carb, sent off the 034 distributor to be rebuilt/ restored, wheel alignment, powder coating wheels, added quad Hella driving lights, a pair of NOS Bosch fan fare horns, NOS Bosch rear fog light, NOS VWoA bumper guards, Hella H4 headlights, NOS Hella made in Germany rear tail lights, new fender beading, painted side trim, and a set of German standard running boards. All new seals for the hood and decklid. Both door seals are original and in superb condition. All the window seals were replaced with West Coast Metric rubber, front windshield was replaced.

OH MY! You stuck a ton of labor and $$ into that. I like accessories like the bumper overriders, rack, etc. Hmm no pockets on the doors with everything else done. Great job for sure.

This was a real treat to see the transformation with all of your efforts! Amazing restoration of the factory original paint. Looks like a pro, high-dollar repaint. Are you considering hooking the A/C back up and trying to get it working? How does the car run and handle? You're coming up a bit short with the "1300" engine lid emblem; your engine would be a full 1600. Cool

The Bug runs great, good acceleration, good top speed 75mph plus, handles superb, stops good, starts right up, warms up and idles beautiful, defrost and heat work great. I was planning on getting the AC working: hooking up a belt, vacuum check the system and recharging it. All the lines look to be in excellent condition, compressor has oil in it, turns freely and i can feel the pump working, very smooth. i would like to source out a new dryer and replacement seals before i do all of this. Simce i did allot of this work over the winter, AC was not a priority.

Yes, the Death Foam Rot.... For now, its in hibernation, i treated the area with rust converter/ inhibitor POR-15, stopping the cancer. I then followed up by applying POR-15 epoxy putty to fill in the holes, sanded it down smooth. Then touched it up with color matched PPG oil based paint.

• Over time i plan on sourcing out some donor panels to perform the removal surgery.

•• The "VW1300" European badging refers to it being the Original Standard Model Type 1, yes it has a 1600cc engine, pretty basic model, right down to the felt carpet (now replaced with a Sewfine kit) and plain/ no pocket type door panels. i actually just purchased a custom VW1300RS badge for the deck lid, that should raise some eyebrows.

Shocks: Swapped the front Bilsteins for Sachs, and the Bug is transformed, wow! The ride is smooth and front end also sits lower, its about even now front and rear.

Rear Wheels: Last year, I sourced out some 73 Sport rims (et 26) at a Show in Austin, last week I had two powder coated and put them on the rear. Loving the new look, it's subtle, but makes the car look more sorted out. Still running Pirelli P4 195/60/15 all around.
