Which gas cap position is correct for 100mm Gas Cap when tightened on tank?

12 O'clock position (VW emblem vertical/up and down) - 1st pic

10 O'clock position (VW emblem angled) - 2nd pic

I have two different gas caps that position differently when fully tightened.

Thanks,
Dan

there is no correct position, these were mass produced vehicles and however the cap fit so it was.

use the one in the first photo - it has a satisfying neatness. like parking with all the hubcap emblems the right way up!

Can you loosen the cap and rotate it so it lines up?

I'm guessing No as they appear to be crimped together and meant to be tight but I know I've had one that was loose before.

Another tank I saw in the classifieds, looks like the cap cutouts are aligned top to bottom:

I noticed the OP didn't post a photo with the cap removed, I wonder what tank alignment results in a nice cap alignment?

A gas tank with the notches aligned this way results in a gas cap aligned like this:
