|
|
There seems to be a lot of focus to build full front quarter panels or partial rear quarter panels with bumper mounts, but is anyone making (or working on making) repros of this entire panel:
I added the pre-52 bumper mount. The NOS panel had no mount installed. I don't need the bumper mount - I have the driver's side ready to weld on.
I need this entire panel for the driver side for my 50 split, from the apron all the way to the rear firewall. I don't have enough good or straight metal to weld the partial panels to that are offered by Wolfparts or Restoration Panels. I've purchased an aftermarket rear quarter from Wolfsburg West, hoping I could modify it for earlier use, but the pressing is so bad, it isn't worth it. I haven't been able to find a good enough used one, even if from an oval, to use.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Unfortunately he doesn't make a large enough repair section for my needs. |

Just as a curiosity I wanted to post an old photo from this forum of an amazing stash of early NOS parts--including whole roofs and full rear quarter panels. I thought I would have saved it but I can't find it. Does anyone recall the photo? I don't remember what thread it was in or why. I think it looked like the inside of a European garage space, with shelf-worn NOS panels stacked on and leaning against pallet racking. The panels looked very original with light rust and factory chalk or wax pencil markings on them. |

Mika is amazing, but I did reach out directly to him and unfortunately he cannot make this panel at this time. |

Took a few pics of what I have for my January 1952
top is virtanen panel
Middle is an old Wolf
Bottom is original 60’s panel.
Other than bumper mount, late square fender bolts bosses, and a couple holes to fill in I don’t see much panel differences in the 60s??? I’m some would be different. Like when you get closer to body mount area, etc. _________________ '67 deluxe bus w/the little windows

Agree, I could make the one at the bottom work filling in a hole and swapping out the bumper mount itself, but I need one for the driver's side. I actually already have the middle one from Wolfparts, but the issue is that it doesn't cover enough area. I need the entire section I started this thread with, because of a ton of rust and being rear-ended long ago. |

I found the photos I remembered--the stuff of dreams!
They were in WrennMetalWerks' build thread, "'47 Beetle resurrection," posted by Chris aka splitjunkie on April 28, 2017. He described these surviving panels as "...test stampings from the first set of production dies ...for the earliest production KDFs or perhaps VW39's." I don't know any more about them.

They were originally posted in the VW38/06 thread. I believe the panels are samples that were produced by the company Friedrich Volk ESEM who would later stamp body panels for the VW39 series and perhaps even the earliest Wolfsburg produced cars. They may date from March 1939 when a body assembled of fully pressed panels was exhibited at the Leipzig Spring Fair held between 5th and 13th March 1939. _________________ Check out my Facebook page: Volkswagen Prototypes. |

Is the story known how these panels survived? It seems against all odds, given the War, their size, susceptibility to storage conditions, and then eighty years! Few industrial prototypes outlast their immediate usefulness, and most are intentionally destroyed. They are amazing artifacts. |
