Installing the hoops and wood slats in my double cab for the canvas bed cover. Do you guys stain the slats? What color? Was thinking just natural.
Thanks _________________ 67 Bug

The Bus enthusiast and professional woodworker who made my bed slats for my '59 DC pressure treated the cut/shaped slats in a tank and suggested an occasional run with a rag soaked in tung oil.

I had some hoop slats made from local English Oak. I used a satin Decking Oil.
I chose it because it's for outdoor flooring, so copes with some wear and resists water sitting on a horizontal surface. The brand was Barrettine, but I'm in the UK - not sure if that brand is available in the US.
Most of the outdoor weatherproofing oils that I looked at were only designed for vertical surfaces where the water will run off, rather than sit on the surface.
I also filled any knot-holes in the timber with epoxy resin to stop water getting inside the timber. I stained it with a black dye that enhances the knots. The resin flowed in to the knots that ran through the timber and filled them.
This is what it looked like before I sanded it back and applied the decking oil...

Never heard of Barrettine in the US, but we'll have an equivalent (Thompsons water seal). Thanks for the tip! _________________ 67 Bug

Hi dubman67,
Thanks for the compliment! If you want to see the build thread, click here:

My bed slats are holding up nicely, although when I haul a load it sits atop a few inexpensive Harbor Freight quilted shipping blankets just to be safe. And pretty much every Spring I give the tops of those slats a light wipe with a small rag full of Tung oil. I have a low profile all-metal Brazilian tilt and cover that I can drive into my garage without removal from the DC, but I have the factory bows and a tilt/cover. I'll need to get wood slats made for those factory bows someday, anyone have the correct dimensions of a slat handy (length, width, thickness)?

I was mostly concerned with what might leach out and stain my (future) canopy- so I went with Minwax Polyurethane (2 coats). _________________
