This spring came out of my 1961 Beetle“s gearbox yesterday during a routine gearbox oil change yesterday.

It is about 9 cm (3.5 inches) long and 2 mm (0.07 inches) thick. It was held firmly by the magnetic screw. No (for me) visible damages. Any ideas? Should I worry?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like the coil (garter spring) from the input shaft seal.

Maybe that spring is from an earlier seal, has been in the transaxle for a decade???

But I understand: might be better to be pro-active and ensure that the current transmission shaft seal is OK, rather than risk oil leak and potential transaxle and/or clutch problems.

Hi Cusser,
I wish you were right, but... no: I ve owned this Bug since 1987! I know that with this, I am still no match for you, but I changend the gear box oil three times in all those years and this was the first unpleasant find ever.
But thx for the idea anyway!
