Stopped by to help a guy out with his linkage on an 1835(?) Got a hex bar that is for 34 icts, so its not gonna work and gonna give him a kad linkage to see if he can adapt it.

BUT looking at the carbs, they really look like just a pair of no name 34PICT3s that he got on Ebay as a dual carb kit. Have never seen anything like that before, have you? And does it work OK?

Not looking for "well, you should buy this or buy that". Just wondering if any of you have used this and if it works so I can tell the guy to not waste his time or at least jetting and set up instructions. Assuming the usual 34PICT set up, but these usually come with 127.5 (don't know what is in these) and if these were something like Kads, I would start around a 137.5 main.

I've never seen a kit for dual 34PICT-3 carbs, but I've been considering modifying a pair and running them on modified ICT or Kadron manifolds for years. I'd be interested to see some pictures or get more details! I would think that they could be made to work well.

Maybe he bought someone else's project, where the last owner was trying something similar?

Now that to me looks like just the ticket for my 1641 single port instead of these Kadrons!

I'm running these on a 74 x 88 singleport I built for my wife's 64... Very nice driving motor. Took a bit of tinkering with the help from John Connelly at AC.net to get them in tune, but they've been working awesome for 10k miles so far...
And getting 28-30 mpg too!

The single port kits are much more cost effective than Kadrons, that's for sure. Have you priced single port Kadron manifolds lately Shocked

I'm fairly certain these aren't what the OP saw, as they are a much different carb than a 34-3.

I'm not sure what exactly the OP saw, but these are 34 pdsit's.... not 34 pict's... my mistake.

Kadrons actually work quite well on a sgl port, but the 34´s will handle most normal sgl port builds. I have pulled 94 hp & 160 Nm torque through a set of 34 Solexés on a 1904 sgl port. I´m sure you can pull 100 if you want, but I wanted decent idle qualities too.

Andy, were these carbs oriented sideways ("transverse") so that the throttle arms rotate CW to open? Or were they in the original "longitudinal" position but on the left and right sides of the engine? If longitudinal, the right carb's throttle arm would be directly adjacent to the fan shroud side. You would not be able to (or barely) reach the 2 mixture/volume adjustment screws. Such a setup would need a GeneBerg linkage to push the throttle levers down. The overall width of the carb including the choke housing on the right side, and the fuel cutoff solenoid on the left side will require very carefully made manifolds to keep the carb between the fan shroud and the engine compartment side. Now if you cut off the choke housing and put a plug in place of the solenoid, you narrow the carb width substantially*...

If the carbs were transverse, a Kadron-style linkage could work, but the carb bodies are so long that moving them transversely would result in no free room between the shroud and the engine compartment side. Those could work in a Ghia with its wide engine compartment but barely in a Beetle. DongKG built up a dual-carb setup for his Beetle with some older Beetle carbs where he set the two stock carbs transverse.

Yes - these look exactly like a standard 34 PICT3 mounted 90 degrees from normal. I advised the guy that he may need to plug the idle solenoid port to clear the linkage.

This set up it totally new to me. (not mine) I am also concerned about his jetting as mentioned. Like I said this is an 1835 and if they have the 127.5 mains, I suspect they will be way too small or is there something magical about the 34 PICT3 that lets is llive with small mains, which I doubt. Thinking he should start with 135, then possible end up with 137.5 or 140s....

You DID take a photo of the guy's engine, so we can see that carb setup? Wink

Was the fan shroud a 36 hp style, or a stock fresh air? If a 36 hp one such as a repro, the narrower width could result in just enough room to have the 34 PICTs transversely. Manifolds would need to be carefully fabricated to maximize the free space alongside the carbs.

Pictures, man! We need pics!

I've long time coming wanted to do what it sounds like the guy has. My take on it would be to make an adapter plate to run the carbs in the stock orientation, use DIY Berg style carb linkage, ICT manifolds, and a simple stock layout exhaust like a Vintage Speed sport or a Tri-mil hot dog. Keeping it all VW would give me a stuffy Razz

Doing the guy a favor by running out to his house once in a while to help him sort it out. No pics and I just gave him the Kad linkage to help him out. It is a 36 horse style shroud. No clearance issues except, as mentioned, concerned about his passenger side idle cut off.

As luck would have it you posted this thread while I was gathering the parts to make a DIY linkage similar to the berg style, and I think something similar could be made to work well, even with the idle cutoff solenoid present. I'd be interested to see how his setup works out

Almost as coveted as the single ICT Weber setup. Dual ICTs would be better. Bigger 29mm versus the 26mm 34pict venturi.
