Hook Assist Strap | Beetle 1960

Hello All,

Anybody ever make a Leather Assist Hook Strap ?? For beetle 1960.

I would like to make one for me but no clue for the correct measurement such as Length dan Width. Anybody could help me on this ??

I'm assuming you don't have a vinyl one you can just measure?

It's supposed to be the same strap from 1958 to mid 1967. The only thing that changed was the shape of the hook to accommodate a vinyl cover for it.

The one i have here runs about 240mm long, doubled over, each ply is just over 3mm thick and is overall about 28mm wide.

Did a quick search of the Gallery for an assist strap with a ruler next to it. Not seeing a decent one, I just took some images.

Now the specific length is not that important, you could make it different if you want to, for your own purposes and tastes.

Any idea about the Screw Size ?? The correct Screw Length ??

FYI - Since you say you have a 1960 model. There is a 1960 parts book available on TheSamba...

You'll find Diagram 31 on pdf page 212, and the part information on 8-65 (page 217)

It states that it is a 4mm machine screw 18mm long with a countersunk head.

Now, I'm not sure about that 18mm though, mine only have 12mm worth of threads. You can see that in the photo since the ruler is not very far from it. And I'm pretty sure those are original screws.

Oh, and one thing the parts book does NOT tell you is the thread pitch. It is M4 with 0.7 pitch machine threads.

I looked it up in the August 1971 parts book and it says the same thing about M4x18, but a different N series part number.
