Hell, get a set of crappy wheels and put paddle baja tires on it. I'm sure it will grip just fine.
Or get some chains. Bugs can do great in the snow with little or no modification at all.
I know I'm preachin' to the choir, but the vw bug was the first car ever to be driven on Antarctica, and that was a 6v 1200 40 horse. |

Something like that, only I would leave the tires on the back and skis on the front. I'm not so sure about the prop on the back tho. |

Wouldn't you need more weight in the front of the car to get the skis to steer? IMO, you would need some setup where the skis twist onto there edges and steer the same way a human would on skis, you would still need weight to get good bite on the edges of the skis for steering. _________________ 1971 Baja Bug

Hmm. Good point. Maybe fasten some lead tractor weights or something. And don't snowmobile skis have a fin on the bottom? Wouldn't that be sufficient bite in the snow? |

When I was a kid (back in the 70's) I recall a guy had a bug with skis on the front. The thing that sticks out in my mind is how he steered it. He fabricated a split emergency brake handle with one cable to each handle. That way he could apply left or right brake to assist turning. Much like a tractor. |

Seriously? VWs are great in the snow in stock condition. What tires are you using? Very wide and/or performance tires are not good on any car in the snow |

iv alwasys wanted to put a set of them mattracks on the back and skis on the front. definitly would need a split e-brake. way too much forward traction. |

I posted a thread real similar to this in a different forum. I would love to convert a bug to something similar to this
Their is a Polaris Kit that I think would bolt on well along with a modified front ski (like from a snowmobile -- maybe doubled up with a blade between for each side) I have also thought about the traks with just a ribbed sand tire up front.
I am excited to hear about someone else with this idea. Let us know how it goes if you get yours working![/url] _________________ 1971 Superbeetle

Those skis on the van look serious.
The tracks look almost long enough to just be able to go completely under the van with no skis and steer like a tank.
Why doesnt someone just put on a set of MATTRACKS on the rear of their bug and make up some skis and have at it ???
(other than the extreme cost it could be done) _________________ LMAO at all the power trippers out there.

This is more what I was talking about
with only the back trax on -- I haev seen these on some pretty hefty large ATV and I think a modified VW would be light enough for the heavy duty ones -- still way outside my price range though. _________________ 1971 Superbeetle

Nope, I have no idea where I found it, but if you look closely it's removable. It looks like the ski's bolt to the stock front drums and the rear are just wider paddle tires. I would think that you would need to engineer the skis to tilt so you could grab and edge to turn. It would be pretty cool if you could hit the brakes and the skis would snowplow for you!
