I finally got around to doing the other 3 windows on my Bus. Last time I used steel wool and comet. This time I used a 4.5" Electric DA Sander with a foam pad and Fast Orange hand cleaner. Made light work out of a 2 hour job from the last time. I recommend doing this even more if your windows are out so you get all the stains. _________________ Anthony

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like that would scratch the hell out of the glass... _________________ -Andrew |

Sorry I had to leave to go to a graduation---didn't check my post. I did just an "edit" to my last post---I don't know what a DA grinder is. _________________ Somewhere there is a jar with your name on it!

Hmmm Andrew do you honestly think I would suggest this if it scracthed your glass. Wait as you put it "scratch the HELL out of the glass." Have you ever used Fast Orange hand cleaner? Basically it's abrasive but it starts to break down so it's isn't like using SANDPAPER. I've heard of people using steelwool on calcium build up. So why use elbow grease when you can make it an easier task?

I didn't really think you would, but steel wool on glass seems like it might be bad... _________________ -Andrew |

Just a thought but maybe you should try steam and a terry cloth towel. I have one of those steam buggy deals. The thing removes most anything from anything. works great on the engine. and cleaning suspension compents. Much easier to repair/replace when you start with a clean area. _________________ 1967 Sunroof. |

Heat and laminated glass? I'm gonna let someone else try that first _________________ Somewhere there is a jar with your name on it!

I do high rise window cleaning for a living...If I were you I'd start with the least abrasive method/chemical first. Try #0000 steel wool in the corner first. Make sure that doesn't leave scratches. It shouldn't we use it on low E and tempered glass all day that are worth thousands of dollars. You can get it wet and dap some joy on the steel wool. The problem that most occurs are abrasive(dirt crystals)that get swirled around on the glass, leaves etch lines. You can see that on all types of glass, and think of all the times we've "scraped" our windows with dirt on them to remove the ice and snow???
2. Anyway the next step if #0000 steel wool doesn't remove the alkalie buildup is #000 steel wool, but that is pushin it. Don't use scrubers like SOS, which are very abrasive or green kitchen cleaning pads. The green kitchen pads also can have a abrasives in them. If you do use a pad it has to be the white pad.
3.If the alkali buildup is great, a razor might need to be used. Try a new one inch razor and buy a little handle to help support it. It will make it easier. You must clean the surface first! Only scrape in one direction!! moving it back and forth can drag particles under the razor and scratch the glass.
4.If those methods dont' work, an acid will be in order. An acid will help neutralize the alkali, bringing the balance back to 7 on the ph scale. We havn't found anything over the counter that works well. You can try to order some acid for a window cleanign supply company. It is designed to use on glass without acid etching the glass. It can be expensive and a little dangerous. The acid made for glass is about 3% by solution and it can still burn you skin etc... At this point you have nothing to lose your trying to restore your glass. Hope this helps. DP |

The only window that is laminated is the windsheild. all the others are tempered glass. The heat from the steamer is not gonna hurt the tempered glass. But your right stay away from the laminated windsheild if you try the steamer route. _________________ 1967 Sunroof. |
