Looking to see what transmission is in my truck . Works as it should just engine is running hi rpm at cruising speed . I am running a 1776cc engine. Would like to ether change ring and pinion or forth gear ratio to help with this .

If that first character in the sn is an H, it's probably a 64ish bus transaxle. Could be anything inside as far as gearing now though, a lot can happen in 57 years.

Thanks I have been looking also after two hours I found a post in the performance engine and transmission forum . That’s what I found out also just ten mins ago . Do they offer a better forth gear for that transmission? Or would it be better to change the ring and pinion ?

Don't change your gearing unless you have a massive increase in power. It might look good on paper, but it will not perform well.

There are charts where you can put your car in each gear then turn the crankshaft one revolution and see how many revolutions your wheel turns to calculate each gear ratio. Do a search since these cars are old and more than likely the tranny has been gone throuhg and may not have the stock gear ratios.

What is "high rpm'?
What speed are you using as 'cruising speed'?

Do you know what VW had as cruising speed for a truck of yours year? and what rpm that was? (it's in the owners manual) Are you running higher rpm than that?

The gearing in that tranny might not be what it was when new, FWIW. What boxes does it have now?

Also, engine needs to run at a "high" rpm to cool, If you are not use to an a.c. VW it will seem high.

Also, what size tire are you running?
