|

Guys,
While doing quite a bit of general internet searching in conjunction with threads here on the Forum re CHT sensor location, I ran across a lot of "information" about "Spark Plug Indexing" on other types of engines.
Out of curiosity, I did some searches here and didn't find anything.
Since several very knowledgeable and respected guys on here seem to have strong (and often/usually differing) opinions on anything and everything pertaining to an engine setup, I was wondering what the consensus is with regards to "Spark Plug Indexing" when it comes to VW engines.
Not trying to be a TROLL, but am curious as to what you guys think.
Thanx and stay well, my friends!!

Pretty hard to do on #1 and #3 on a engine with dual carbs.
And harder if the plug has multiple electrodes. _________________ Glenn

Not worth the time for the very tiny fractional amount of difference it makes in horsepower or fuel economy. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

I would expect that multiple electrode plugs would not benefit at all from indexing but thier very nature. |

Unless you really need that 1 extra HP at the end of the track, I would not bother. But there would be no harm in it. I don't think the indexing washers are very expensive. |

Uh.....why not just buy a sparkplug that is set up for "side gapping"....there are many of them. The triple electrode plugs like the NGK BP6ET and Bosch W7DTC...are not only multiple electrode so dont care about index...they are already side gap plugs.
From what I have been told....for the most part....plug electrode index can come into play mainly on VERY high compression/high rpm engines.....where the AF swirl pattern is extreme....and ignition of the mixture at insane speeds can benefit from the electrode gap facing the AF charge in exactly the right way. Its more about reliability.
Think top fuel or any engine with very high boost forced induction....and its mainly about reliability.
As others have noted....nit really necessary for about 99.9% of VW's.
But the triple plugs are great for certain engine combos.
You can see close up pictures of the side gaps both new and used to see the wear pattern in this thread
