Hello my fellow WBX lovers.
I run a 1984 GW engine in my beetle.
When my engine gets warm the idle gallops away until I pull out the idle valve.
Is this a fit for my engine?

Is the number on my unit. |

Hi,
I have been running without the idle control for years.
My van passes Cal SMOG every year.
Not sure why anyone needs it.
The only diff without it is that the idle wanders a little more without it.

It is needed when you are in idle and there is load on the engine.
Examples:
AC cycles on. Power steering is used. Automatic transmission goes into gear. Radiator fan kicks in.
All those will cause idle RPM to drop and might stall the engine.
It does not affect smog. |

i've been running without one for years also. the only circumstance where i notice it is on sub-zero (F) cold starts where i need to keep my foot on the gas for 30 seconds or so. then, everything is fine. _________________ -dan

I was on hold because my van was getting painted and repaired after a hail damage and I just got it today. I am also waiting on a couple of test units to come in which I will then prepare for beta testing.
So I hope I'll be able to ship out in a week or two. |

crap... i didn't recall that you, Zoti, were the designer of the alternative control unit. my previous post, saying i'm getting along fine without one, was in no way meant to diminish your work. i think it is wonderful and incredible we have people stepping up to design obsolete parts no longer available. so. once again, Kudos to you and your project! carry on and ignore me! _________________ -dan

No problem. I think the idle control unit has its place when there are extra loads on the engine. |

I thought you couldn't start without it?? I learnt something today... I tested a few units I had sitting about a month ago since I have a trustworthy WBXer with AC running, one unit was so bad it would barely start. Some were bad only with AC on, and only one was good with AC on _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

5 years + running without one. starts just fine. prolly need to have foot on throttle when cold, foot off starts fine when warm. one of course must raise the idle speed with the large screw on the throttle body but after that, it works. _________________ -dan

We are moving on with making 10 production units.
I have been testing it on my van and a couple of other vans. We had no issues and the unit works great maintaining steady idle.
Of course, the rest of the engine has to be in good shape. The unit will not fix issues not related to ide stabilizing. |
