I've been out of the scene since the Invasion in Colorado so I haven't kept up on parts suppliers. With a lot of help from @vwfye I've got an engine and it's ready to install. Before I do that I want to replace the cheap, aged, hardened fuel lines. I don't really care if they are German or meant for American cars, I just want something that is reasonably priced (so not necessarily the cheapest) and will last for well over a decade or more.

So, what do y'all recommend?

Hose specifically.

Good informative read, always love reading what @raygreenwood has to say.

So it looks like nylon fuel-rated hose is the route, now who are the suppliers?

The gist is that pretty much anywhere you can find properly sized Nylon line rated and marked as "fuel line"....you will be fine with it.

You can buy Dorman Nylon fuel line at Summit for about $35 for 25 feet.

Putting the fittings on...thats a longer post but there are many options. O have been working out how to connect to the various components in D-jet. Ray

Okay, looks like a lead there and I'm sure other locations. A cursorary search brought up "Dorman" so that is another keyword for me. Looks like I'd need to find a way to mate the line to the existing ports (gas tank, filter, carbs, etc.).

Additional input still welcomed.

the gates barricade I used several years ago when I installed my 1904cc is still like new, I cut a section open last year when I had my engine out. It is multi fuel compatible.

I plan to try some of this at some point soon.

I hope it has improved. The old school braided line was the best for decades. I started to see problems in the early 2000's.....but I can tell that while ethanol has been an issue with the older lines.....ethanol was/is not the only problem the fuel lines are having. I moved from one 10% ethanol city to another with 10% ethanol with about 3 complete fuel line changes spanning both cities.

The fuel in Atlanta gave me no problem. The first 3 years in Dallas....no problem. Both had 10% ethanol. Than Dallas got repeatedly popped for ozone violations. The fuel package got reformulated......and fuel line life went out the window. So while ethanol is part of the problem.....its not all of it.

And back in the day....with the old braided lines....diesel would eat it. So.....to see a braided line that is formulated for muti-fuel.....gives me good hope.

I still plan to run everything from the from end to the engine sheet metal in the back witn nylon. It just makes better sense because its easily 15-20 years bulletproof no matter what fuel.

But.....in an enclosed VW 412 engine compartment compared to a type 3 which is open to the ground and air.....our engine compartment cwn easily average 225° to 250° in the summer.

Most nylon fuel line is good to a max constant temp of about 248°F. Thats a little too close to peak engine bay temp for nylon.

So, I would probably keep as much metal and fuel hose inside the engine bay as possible. Even if I still have to change the fuel hose every 2-3 years.....thats only about 8 feet compared to 30' for the whole car.

It also keeps certain difficult connections like the CS valve.....simple. Ray

Ray, I'm confused by where you will be running nylon hose and "regular" fuel hose (like what Glenn showed). Am I correct that you will use nylon forward of the engine tin and use regular hose in the engine bay & on the engine?

Yes, a cursory exploration shows special connectors for nylon. Yipee.

Yes...sorry...had a few typo's...it happens when I work on my phone ... Rolling Eyes

Everything from the front end....fuel tank, pump and filter connections etc....will by nylon. The fuel pipes in the tunnel will still be steel. The lines FROM the tunnel to the engine sheet metal fire wall will be nylon.....both feed and return lines.

All lines inside the engine compartment will either be steel or fuel HOSE. Its just to hot inside the engine bay for nylon on a 412. You would probably be just fine on a bus or a type 3. Ray

Okay, cool, that is my plan as well.

I used NHRA certified line for my pink car this last time. Multifuel compatible, and the car was 100 bucks, plus fittings and as a non braided, non metal, it was the only one allowed on the track. Cool

I used this too. It's little off in size... larger OD, but still fits. Bend radius is increased a little by this, though. Multi-fuel compatible and it's lasted a few years so far with no sign of leaks or cracking. FI pressure rated, but a bit pricey.

No but i have to ask why e85 (flex fuel)? It runs significantly hotter which would be terrible in air cooled engines.

Today all gasoline is E10 or E15. Maybe tomorrow it will have a higher content.

Or run non-oxy? Mn still has non-oxy for offroad, boats and classic cars.
