I am changing out the oil seals in the trans and it appears one of my differential bearings is a bit loose. The other side is solid as Sears (or what Sears use to be).
Anyway, can someone take a look at this short video and all me if it warrants replacement?

Yes, it warrants replacement. Those bearings are actually preloaded. Should be no play in the bearing, actually the opposite _________________ '69 Karmy, '69 Camper, Meyers clone, '65 drag bug, 10.78 @ 128 (sold it) '51 Dodge farm truck,

rugblaster has lots of transmission experience. I'd go with his call. Normally the differential bearings have a slight amount of preload on them. Be sure to check the last before and after. Don't preload the bearings until the bell housing is on. You'll need a tool like this to hold the case properly with the bell housing removed.

381/8 self-designed tool. It has to hold the transmission case pins tight together with no slop or free play.
VW factory approved tool

I should have mentioned that this is with the bell housing off. Should I replace the bell housing and adjust the rings back to their position and then check the bearing before replacing it, or is it obvious the bearing is bad? _________________ 1977 Asi Riviera |

the bell housing should not come off until the preload is marked and reduced. Right side as I recall is the one to loosen. Best to buy Rick Long's CD on how to set up the preload with new bearings. You can't set the pre-load with nothing holding the case from spreading. Have to make that tool, and it has to be installed before taking measurents. If you have never set ring and pinion lash you may be getting in over your head. Just my 2 cents worth. _________________
