help me come to terms. Ive had this bus for 25 years. Ive had fun with it. taken it all over, lived in it. its got a relatively new engine with 7k miles on it. runs fine etc. but i just dont get to use it anymore. and its been outside for the past three years. i kept it indoors for 20 years and it made a huge difference. i dont want to see it die a horrible rust death. i have too many vehicles to properly give it the attention it deserves. i hate selling things. but im also at a loss as to how to sell it becasue i hate ebay and am thinking of listing it here. but everytime i try to post here i break some rule that i didnt know about. ha! im probably going to get in trouble for posting this! help a bus owner out and tell me what you think? _________________ '88Doka JX td

I had a 1971 that followed the same path. Then 25 years later I had to buy and restore another one. If I had to go back I never would have sold the 1971. But that said, I am 70 now, can't sit for as long as I could 10 years ago even because of circulation issues, and if you are that age then maybe it is time too. But if you have miles and years to go, clean it up, stabilize the rust, use it and keep it garaged. There are many here who sold and who came back. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin

I agree with SGKent. If the day comes 1, 5, 10 years from now and you want to fire up the Bus and go for a run or a camp out or... It will be far costlier to pick up a new one then spend time here and there maintaining it. But in the end you have to do what’s right for you and maybe the thought of another keeper making new memories with it is something you might feel good with too.
Good luck with your choice! It’s a tough one as I have let go of 3 in the past with one being a HUGE regret but the other 2 I enjoy seeing them from time to time on Instagram or local GTGs. _________________ In search of a Vanagon

Don't need a whole "woe is me" thread, just post in in the Classifieds if you wanna sell it. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

yea, my guess would be OP tried to sell something by just starting a thread..
Why you gotta call out that it is a lowlight? If it was a highlight, that is worth talking about. |

haha if theres a rule ill probably break it.Ive actually never tried to sell anything here, but ive seen plenty of sales go through. the bus is living in Maine , which is also part of why i want to unload it. i did the inner and outer rocker skins about ten years ago ,treated them inside and never drove it in any snow or rain, and theyre holding up great. i also replaced driver side fender and did some light repairwork to the body, but its getting to the time where i need to either go 100% and tear it all down and do everything, or move on. I have 20 vehicles and i work on them all myself so this isnt about 'making money' or whatever the other bozos were posting about. im not worried about selling it as much as selling it to a person who isnt going to destroy it. ive kept everything stock on this bus from the day i owned it ( except for the 78 tranny i put in it) the orignal tranny wasnt great for highway. otherwise its had a dual port 1700 forever. original kids cot, curtains, mats, headliner, lights and interior are all still there and not destroyed. ive spent a lot of time over the past 25 years with the bus and i certainly have plenty of other vehicles i can work on and enjoy or use more often, so im not 'on the fence' as uch as im just bummed to have to do it. but there is hopefully a person who will have as much fun as i have had with it out there looking! _________________ '88Doka JX td

I'd just pretty much copy and paste this into a classified ad. Throw in a handful of pictures and you're done.
This isn't a personal knock- just an observation or comment. I've never really understood why people are concerned about selling a vehicle to someone who will take care of it / not destroy it / love it / keep it stock / not repaint it etc. I've poured a lot of love into a lot of different cars, but once the cheque clears, they can light it on fire for all I care. It's no longer mine. If I cared that much about it staying the way I wanted it to, I would have kept it. |

Hello,
Well, then.
Clean the bus up(take personal stuff out), take some honest pictures any issues you know of, post an honest description of the bus in the classifieds with a price you'd be happy with taking and go from there.
And, yes. Some folks here can fall into the mobs grip quickly. It is quite click-ish around here at times.... Yet, I like your retorts on that issue.
Good luck, selling your bus. It is hard getting rid of something you've owned and worked on, for 25 years.... You'll find the right buyer. Doesn't sound like you're in any hurry.
PS. Oh, and my location is next too the pile of hot brass casings... you're safe. I don't shoot glass. I like the sound of metal plate better, when struck. |

Angus,
thank you , as you said its hard getting rid of it and specifically these days with online sales. im old i am used to selling to people who i either know or to people that i know are familiar with what theyre buying. I figured it would make sense to list it here rather than the bay becasue there are way more people here that 'know what theyre buying' which is what i meant by a good home. I dont care what gets done to the vehicle really after i sell it, but i do want to at least not have someone calling me asking basic questions that all VW owners know the answers to already. i also do not and never have used facebook and dont have any snese about the community there. thanks for the reply and watch those castings! i just poured out #1000 of 87300 today! _________________ '88Doka JX td

same here. i don't care if they set fire to it after i'm done counting the cash. i sold it, it's their problem now.
to the o/p. sounds like you have a full plate. clean it out and shove a for sale sign in it. people still buy cars that way too but limits your market and potential sales price. _________________

skillz- yeah i live on an island with about 800 people so there arent really any 'drive bys' hahah for most people that works but im out in the atlantic ocean a few states above you in as yousay 'the sticks'. i also couldnt care less if someone drives into a wall after the check clears but as i said earlier
'I dont care what gets done to the vehicle really after i sell it, but i do want to at least not have someone calling me asking basic questions that all VW owners know the answers to already."
like you said ,i have a full plate for sure, so the last thing i need is another 'student'. id rather sell to a person who knows that proper sized intake and flywheel size and theyll already know its worth too! thanks for the reply dude im sure ill have no prob if i list it here. _________________ '88Doka JX td
