I suspect I have a bad thermostat in my ‘84 so I’m changing that out today. I opened up the housing and it appears the previous owner put some kind of blue gasket maker around the regular gasket - do I need to do that or will the black O-ring be sufficient?

the housing is pitted and corroded. prolly why the schmoo was added. can you source a new/better housing? _________________ -dan

This is actually my second housing...I ended up snapping two bolts off from the top of the other one and was unsuccessful in trying to drill them out. I picked this one up from a guy for $30
