I've pulled my parcel shelf to repaint it. There is a lot of dried up adhesive on it that I can't get off. Was there originally a rubber mat on the shelf? _________________ Jerry

| There was fabric glued to the package trays of passenger models. |

Cool! thanks, Greg.
For the life of me I couldn't figure out why all that dried up glue was there. But I had noticed that there was something in your ad for your '67 Camper.
What kind of fabric was it? _________________ Jerry

The material would have matched the upper and lower door panel material.
Except for 59-61 busses, which the material would be the same but without the heat seams. |

I see. So in my case it would be the dark grey vinyl. _________________ Jerry

Timely question.
While cleaning out the 15 window(Gus the Bus as my son says) I noticed the liner on the parcel tray. It sure looked like it had been there a long time. Brett asked me today if it was factory and I said yes, then thought "I don't know". I guess I was right after all.
I can't tell what colour mine is - just kinda dark dirt/dust colour.
I guess if it is OG, I will attempt to clean it up and leave it be. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

None of my four buses had material or glue on the parcel trays when I bought them, so I am thankful for that as any material would have been worn out, anyway.
Putting junk like a church key and coins on the far left side of my buses parcel tray over the years eventually messed up the paint. For the last bus I finished restoring and am now driving, I cut a mouse pad to fit into that spot so the paint on the parcel tray will not get ruined; it works great. I am also using a small change purse to put coins in; it keeps the coins together. |

Damn, I wish I would have known that when I started disembleing. My 15 window had the original linning. It was the same material as the door panels! I thought the PO had added it for looks. Oh well!! _________________ Looking for white cabinets for a '61 camper

| Yep...I bought a new 67 delux...it had a sheet of vinyl...same color as the interior, glued to the parcel tray...not over the outer edge...just inside the lip. |

does the vinyl, when glued down, follow the contours of the shelf? And how far does it go up the front side where it curves up to the dash? _________________ Jerry

| I have cleaned up a few busses with the liner in them....but thought even if OG it looked like crap....so in the trash it went. I'm sure they will be worth gold one day. |

Clara, thank for the photo. I can't seem to recall ever seeing the material there before on any bus I've looked at. I guess I just never paid that much attention to details.
So it looks like it isn't glued snugly around the ribs of the shelf? _________________ Jerry

Jerry
it is not glued snugly around the ribs(at least not on mine).
As a matter of fact, it is quite sloppy; not the usual attention to detail we have come to expect from the old Germans.

Riff Raff, thanks for the photo.
The remenants of the glue, on mine, is kinda smeared, haphazardly all over the shelf. The only way I've been able to remove the dried up glue has been with car wax. _________________ Jerry
