Was doing an oil change and found this what looks to be some think of gasket material laying beside the oil screen. The engine is a stock 67, 1500 and has a little over 8500 miles on it. Engine runs great just have no idea what this material is from. It is hard and brittle and looks to be some kind of gasket material. No metal shavings or anything was in the oil or around the magnet plug.
Anyone seen anything like this before?

No, I have been using a silicone gasket for several years. They are reusable and work great. _________________ 67 Sun Roof / Born Sept 66 / Second Owner

Check your oil filler cap gasket for a missing chunk. _________________ 1967 Bug ( the daily rod )

That.....and we see size and shape....but can you give us an idea of the thickness? And is it paper gasket or rubber?
So its roughly 3/4" x 3/4"? Thats kind of a big chunk of gasket if its from a paper sheet gasket. Yes....depending on what type of gasket your oil filler has.....I have seen some that use wide gaskets cut from sheet gasket there.
Just seems like too big of a big piece of gasket to be from anything other than the filler gasket .....or maybe from a carb base gasket etc.

The little round paper type disc gasket from the cap of a bottle of oil?
The oil I use pretty sure just has a foil seal but not sure about other brands... just another random idea. _________________ 1967 Bug ( the daily rod )

Ok, if I understand correctly, this engine case hasn't seen the light of day in 54 yrs, from the factory?
You say it is brittle? Paper thin? I imagine a lot of things and reactions happen in 54 yrs. It does make me think of hardened case sealant, the old style, somehow breaking loose from some area Hans brushed on too much, that morning in 1967. |

The case was split in 2013 and hot tanked. However, this does look like very old sealant, which is very thin and brittle. _________________ 67 Sun Roof / Born Sept 66 / Second Owner

It looks like it has a curvature? Could you eyeball a diameter? |

Sometimes hot tanking (what they do for VW cases isn't technically called hot tanking but you get the point, a normal hot tank would destroy magnesium quickly) isn't enough to fully clean a case, some sort of follow up cleaning is needed.. Could be some old chunk of gasket lodged somewhere and never got fully cleaned out during the rebuild 8 years ago and just finally broke free. Either that of some debris fell into the oil filler recently.
There is simply not many gaskets that are ever at risk of making it inside the crankcase. And the ones that would, well, it could only happen during a rebuild or repair...changing, installing, or removing the fuel pump, generator stand, oil pump, drain plate...
From the picture it looks like it has some sort of fiber texture so I would say it is not old sealant just based on the picture _________________ 1967 Bug ( the daily rod )
