Hello,

I'm considering putting an offer in on this truck, but I see a few things that raise questions for me and for the price?
I was wondering what the group opinion is as I've been out of the Split Bus game for 10 years or so.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2459753
and here's the google album he has with more pics, https://photos.app.goo.gl/6QGcBeCQQ7x19stz5

Feel free to PM me.

Things I see so far are:
Missing rear mat
Missing underside pedal plate
Missing bed wood
Engine fan hoses not present?

Thanks,
Chris

On any recently repainted bus, I would want to see the before pictures. The body could have been nice or very very bad beforehand and they would both look the same in photos.

Doublecabs delivered to Uraguay had bullet turn signals and euro bumpers. And safari windows.

Thanks for the input. Think I'll pass, since I'm in Oregon and it's be an expense just to check it out in person.

On a quick look:
* The front and rear seats look wrong.
* Rear seat looks totally wacky
* Master cylinder looks like it's leaking
* The 2 heater tubes underneath the rear are weird and I guess home-made?

* The metal for the bed is wrong - massive replacement with wrong shape?

Wish I could afford this one, but $125K!!
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2488038

I want a truck that mostly original, say a 7 out of 10, that I'm not afraid to park out on the street. Maybe one I could take on the Shasta run again. I'll keep looking I guess.

Not a horrible truck, just a patched up South American work truck that's probably worked more hours that I have. (And I'm OLD!)
Too bad for the Frankenstein repairs, but somebody did a LOT of work too.
Way too much money and it will have stuff worn out that one will never find worn on a North American truck, where most only were driven a few years.

You really need to look at this in person. The saving grace of double cabs is that you remove the fuel fire wall under the back seat and take a look at what’s not so pretty in the void space. Nobody bothers to go over it, so it will give you a good opportunity to see what it was like before.

All signs point to not so great of care was taken to get this back on the road though. The underside looks pretty gnarly compared to the outside. And the back seat is cobbled together. Who does that? You just have to ask: If they made shortcuts with everything underneath, what does that say about what they DID work on?

Personally, I would much rather start with a rusty one and make it pretty as I went through it.

The real answer was here:

Agreed, when I put a gas heater in my 61 dual cab, it was under the back seat that I got the real history of the vehicle.

Yes VR port code is Uraguay.
I was wondering about the bullets. Should it have euro wiring with two tone taillights like a euro spec 62, then?
176 is overrider bumpers.
Body rust and wear is more important than a bumper that's bolted on, IMO.
Though the higher the price, the more I would want the right bits bolted on.

117 is no seats in rear cabin, according to this site.
710 is also possibly a Uruguay Truck code, possibly to do with gates.

certainly too rusty under the shiny paint. would not pay to have it re-imported from France.

Without the rust issues it would be a very desirable high hinge crewcab.

Good point, but REIMPORTATION would likely have the advantage that the 25% chicken tax does not have to be paid a second time, if the vehicle was previously in the US. Perhaps this one was never in the US?
Still best to use an experienced RI, Registered Importer.
